Meet Reza Idria!

@RezaIdria is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Deputy Dean of Student Affairs at the Faculty of Social and Government Sciences, State Islamic University Ar-Raniry (@Araniry), Banda Aceh, and a former Lee Kong Chian NUS–Stanford Distinguished Fellow (2022–2023). Widely respected for his insightful and nuanced work on Islamic law and society in Aceh, Reza brings a rare depth of scholarship that bridges anthropology, religion, and lived experience. He has written extensively on Acehnese society, covering topics ranging from Syari’ah law to post-tsunami life in Aceh.

At the Indonesia Update, he will discuss his research on shari’atization and its discontents in Aceh, examining how the governance of shari’a is shaped in practice through frictions, contradictions, and critical reflections.
