This is why Pros and Casuals can never agree on game balance…
I played a couple games in end of season plat lobbies last split and I noticed something very interesting that changed my perspective.
High elo lobbies were dominated almost exclusively by Revenant, Pathfinder, support + 6 Mozams
Almost every team was running this combo and if they weren’t, they probably weren’t going to win. It was insanely oppressive and if you weren’t running it you were just at a disadvantage, simple as that. This meta got boring very quickly.
But I played a few games in end of season plat lobbies and I noticed that there was almost no rev or Mozams. The weapon and legend meta in low elo was incredibly diverse and over 3 games I didn’t remember seeing a single rev. I jumped on someone with rev ult Mozams and they were octane hip firing an r301.
I think this is why there is such a large disconnect between pros and casuals when it comes to game balance. Casuals lean more towards using whatever they want or don’t know what is good to use. But in high elo people are min maxing anything they can to gain elo so certain strategies become the overwhelming majority of the lobby.
So when casuals see a character they don’t know a lot about or a weapon they don’t think is OP getting nerfed, they sometimes think it’s just pros getting what they want and ruining the game.
Because, as an example, they play maybe 10 hours a week and fight almost no revenants. So they may be confused when they see it get nerfed. Whereas a high elo player plays 30+ hours a week and sees well over half the lobby playing it and are probably playing it themselves.
The biggest example of this I can remember is gold knockdown shield self revive. This was the absolute worst item in the history of competitive apex legends. It was unanimously hated by top players because it ruined final ring games. But there was a huge uproar from the casual community when it was nerfed.
Why? Because there are almost no final ring games in casual apex. It was just a fun item that was very exciting to use and rare to find.
I think examples like this are why there is such a huge difference in community sentiment towards nerfs and buffs. Every player comes from a different place and has a different # of experiences with every item/weapon/legend depending on what game mode they play and what level they play it at. Neither side is really wrong but I realized this last split and thought it was interesting enough to share.
Me: Logs into Apex to realise I've lost everything.
Respawn: Sorry we'll have this fixed in no time.
24 hours later...
Respawn: Unfortunately we cannot restore the progression that was lost so here are 10 Apex Packs for the inconvenience.
Me:
I understand you're frustrated, and you have the right to. Respawn has acklowedged the issue, and devs are working on it.
Just be patient, they will fix this.
One HUGE thing about Apex Ranked that no one (on twitter) talks about…
Rewards.
Why do you play ranked? To lose your mind? Pass the time? Do you actually think it’s competitive? To stream cause there’s nothing else to do?
No one cares about: 1. A *season long non permanent dive trail (targeted in pubs) 2. A badge 3. A holospray.
The charm is OKAY, maybe.
The point is, no one gives a shit about any of that, and if you have no reason to play ranked for the purpose of gaining a reward, then you’ll mindlessly play the game and never care about the outcome anyway and the game will always seem boring because even though the first day or two of a competitive split might be very bare minimum competitive/teams in end game, it will ALWAYS die.
My idea for a reward actually came from World of Warcraft and it was a token - each season, you’d be able to get one and each season a NEW AND REFRESHED set of *rank colors/themed* weapons or character skins could be redeemed. This season, maybe I want the Predator R301, maybe next season I want the Predator Bloodhound, or if the new version of the next seasons R301 is insane, who knows - might just get another.
Obviously there’s tons of options as to what you want, and you’d only be able to get one per split, maybe 2 per season - but they HAVE to change next season and be a different variation.
You have to have a reason to play ranked in the first place, because we can never judge ranked when the only reason we play it now is to try and stream 8 hours a day, obviously that shit is not working, passion comes and goes - but at-least make that a personal problem, instead of the game forcing that problem on you to try and make a living.
