The NBA collective bargaining agreement bans strikes, which means the Bucks are breaking their own contract to stop playing in protest of police violence. (But this is your reminder that there aren't really illegal strikes, just unsuccessful ones.) https://t.co/c2g07wXspx
Just briefly: the fact that universities were under tremendous financial and political pressure to reopen during a raging pandemic may motivate but does not in any way EXCUSE putting countless lives at risk while publicly justifying it with magical-thinking nonsense & gaslighting
IC Contingent Faculty and students talking about concerns for the fall semester in the @ithacavoice today! The college must support the most vulnerable members of the community during remote instruction. That includes paid sick leave for all. https://t.co/UhDLdC3seo
@UNC this is a really bad look. There are few machines that stand in opposition to social justice and support elitism more than academia. What is the ration of the UNC pres salary to the housekeepers? What was their differential risk for #COVID19?
The administrators who gathered over Zoom last summer and decided to open campus may have done enough damage to shut down their university permanently.
Going to remote-only was absolutely, unquestionably the correct moral and operational decision. It's good that the decision to do this has finally been made. There was no reason to put the entire campus community through hell by delaying it.
Ithaca College has announced we will have no face to face classes in the fall, leaving students housing-insecure and profs having to suddenly pivot to online (again) with three weeks left until the semester. They could've made this decision months ago.
Here's what this ongoing series of unnecessary and costly mistakes tells us: Ithaca College leadership isn't fit to lead. We need shared governance, so that all stakeholders on campus have a share in decision making. Because this proves that they should not be making decisions.
Every other university in the process of bringing students onto campus right now better be taking a serious look in the mirror. The good news is you don't have to go through the pain of making the mistake. But, you better learn from UNC.
