A national NGO that accompanies communities in harnessing indigenous knowledge for healthy people and ecosystems, and promoting good governance through advocacy
Today, @ICEkenyaorg joined farmers, community organizations, and environmental champions at Mariiki Dam, Maragua, to mark #WorldEnvironmentDay 2026. Through tree planting, knowledge sharing, and collective action, we reaffirmed a simple truth: healthy ecosystems are the foundation of resilient communities, sustainable food systems, and a thriving future. Every tree planted today is a step toward restoring our environment and strengthening our shared responsibility to care for the Earth.
As a consumer, what indigenous food would you like to see more often on your tables?
In every basket of agroecologically produced vegetables, every indigenous seed variety, and every value-added product lies generations of knowledge, care for the land, and a commitment to producing food in harmony with nature.
These snapshots capture the diversity that agroecology makes possible; food systems that nourish people, protect biodiversity, and strengthen community resilience.
As conversations around food security continue, perhaps the question is not only how much food we produce, but how we produce it and what we choose to grow.
#madarakaday2026 reminds us that true independence is also found in thriving communities, healthy ecosystems, and the ability of people to sustainably provide for themselves and future generations.
Kiambu County made history last Friday.
The passing of the Kiambu Agroecology Bill marks a major milestone for sustainable agriculture, resilient food systems, and farmer-centered development in the county.
This achievement reflects the power of collaboration between county actors, farmers, civil society, and wananchi who contributed their voices during the public participation process.
@ICEkenyaorg is proud to have supported this journey through advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and technical support toward building healthier food systems and climate-resilient communities.
Now, the focus shifts to implementation and ensuring the Bill translates into meaningful impact for farmers and communities across Kiambu County.
Could agroecology be the future of resilient farming in Kenya?

The Kiambu Farmers’ Field Day, held on 14th May 2026 at Ruhiu’s Organic Farm, Ting’ang’a, successfully brought together over 200 farmers, policymakers, researchers, private sector players, and development partners to champion sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.
Yesterday marked Day 2 of the Agroecology Training for agricultural extension officers in Murang’a County, concluding successfully at WAKAS Organic Farm.
We were honored to be joined by Dr. Apollo Maina, Chief Officer for Agriculture, who reaffirmed the County Department of Agriculture’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote safe food production and strengthen food and nutrition security.
Building on the theory session from Day 1, participants engaged in hands-on learning on key agroecological practices, including compost making, crop diversification, ecological pest management, water conservation, and crop-livestock integration. The Director for Crops, Mr. Peter Muchiri, also led an insightful session on integrating agroecology into extension services, highlighting the critical role of extension officers in driving sustainable agricultural transformation.
This was more than a training—it was a practical and inspiring experience for the frontline agents of change who are championing resilient farming systems and safe food production across Murang’a County.

The Department of Agriculture in Murang’a County, with support from the @ICEkenyaorg , is conducting a two-day training at WAKAS Organic Farm to strengthen the capacity of agricultural extension officers on agroecological practices.
Today’s theory session is equipping participants with practical knowledge on soil health management, composting, crop diversification, integrated pest management, and water conservation. By enhancing the skills of extension officers, the training is expected to improve the quality of advisory services provided to farmers and accelerate the adoption of sustainable, climate-resilient farming practices across Murang’a County.

Enhancing Landscape Restoration at Kivaa Hill!
During the recent tree planting exercise at Kivaa Hill, additional measures were implemented to safeguard the landscape and ensure long-term impact. Sisal was planted across the site to help prevent soil erosion and stabilize the terrain.
Known for its deep-rooted system and resilience in dry conditions, sisal plays a vital role in holding soil together—particularly in sloped areas prone to runoff. By integrating sisal with tree planting, this intervention not only supports vegetation establishment but also strengthens overall ecosystem restoration.
This approach underscores a commitment to sustainable land management—where restoration goes beyond tree planting to building resilience from the ground up.

Across Africa, corporate seed laws and GMOs are eclipsing indigenous seed systems that feed nearly 80% of the continent. Yet our seeds endure as wisdom and survival, shaped by generations of farmer knowledge, not corporate patents.
We must defend small-scale farmers’ rights to save and share seeds, invest in local systems, reject policies that criminalize tradition, and amplify farmer voices in shaping the future of our seeds.

#Happeningnow@ICEkenyaorg is supporting the Murang’a Agroecology Multi-Stakeholder Platform (AE MSP) Technical Steering Committee in a training on Governance and Strategic Leadership.
The training is focused on strengthening the capacity of the Technical Steering Committee to effectively steer the platform towards the successful implementation of the Murang’a Agroecology Policy.
The Technical Steering Committee brings together key actors including Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), research and academia, as well as the County Government of Murang’a through the Departments of Agriculture and Devolution.
By building strong governance and leadership structures, the MSP is better positioned to drive inclusive, sustainable, and impactful agroecological transformation.

Forests are quiet but their impact is loud.
They hold our soils together, bring the rains, support livelihoods, and shelter biodiversity. Yet, they continue to disappear.
This #InternationalDayofForests, we are reminded that protecting forests is not optional; it is essential.
At @ICEkenyaorg , we champion community-driven approaches that strengthen livelihoods and enhance food security through sustainable land use and agroecological practices.
When forests thrive, communities and food systems thrive too.
#InternationalDayOfForests #SustainableLandUse
As we are in the planting seasons let us avoid the usage of chemical fertilisers and hybrid seeds in our farms . Let us embrace #Agroecology by using locally available materials like organic made manure and indigenous seeds ,its the only way to to fight #ClimateChange
Today we celebrate the women who nurture our land, grow our food, and sustain our communities.
This year’s theme, “Give To Gain,” reminds us that when we invest in women, we strengthen our food systems, our environment, and our future.
@ICEkenyaorg witness every day how women are at the heart of agroecology- restoring soils, safeguarding biodiversity, and leading change in their communities.
When women thrive, we all gain.

Another Day, Another Step Forward for Farmers in Kiambu County!
Today we continued public sensitization on the Kiambu County Agroecology Policy, a crucial conversation about the future of our food and farming systems.
This Policy is about more than legislation.
It is about:
✔️ Protecting our soils
✔️ Supporting small-scale farmers
✔️ Promoting safe, healthy food
✔️ Building climate resilience
✔️ Strengthening local food systems
Agroecology puts farmers at the center. And when farmers thrive, we all thrive. The food on our tables begins with the decisions we make today.
This matters to the farmers who grow what we eat.
It matters to consumers.
It matters to all of us.

In recognition of the life and work of Nobel Laureate Professor Wangari Maathai, the African Union set aside 3 March each year as #WangariMaathaiDay, observed together with #AfricaEnvironmentDay.
This decision highlights that protecting Africa’s natural resources is key to the continent’s development. It is a call for governments, institutions, communities, and young people to take stronger action on climate change, fight desertification and biodiversity loss, and include environmental protection in national and regional plans.
Protecting our environment is protecting our food systems, safeguarding peace and stability, and securing Africa’s future under #Agenda2063.
