Former ICU patients encounter more new disease-episodes and contacts with their general practitioner than the comparison group before and 5 years after ICU admission. Read the full article here:

Job satisfaction is largely determined by the degree of perceived autonomy, connectedness, competence, and recognition. They also included recommendations to increase job satisfaction in order to retain nurses in the ICU profession.

In their publication, Gijs Hesselink and Marieke Zegers describe a multicenter qualitative study into the factors that influence the job satisfaction of ICU nurses.
Researchers Aron Jansen, @matthijskox82 and Peter Pickkers from @radboudumc demonstrate that Cytosorb therapy effectively attenuates circulating cytokine concentrations during systemic inflammation.

Development of Moral Injury in ICU Professionals During the... : Critical Care Medicine (https://t.co/qZbwdIK9yO)
Niek Kok, Marieke Zegers et al. conducted 62 serial interviews with 26 ICU professionals over the course of the #COVID19 pandemic and concluded that awareness about #moralinjury is needed. Moral injury differs from #burnout.
Disease heterogeneity in #COVID19 warrants deeper understanding. Niklas Bruse, Peter Pickkers, and @matthijskox82 applied clinical phenotypes previously identified in non-COVID-19 sepsis patients to a large population of critically ill COVID-19 patients.
They found that patients with one phenotype particularly benefited from dexamethasone treatment, reflected by improved survival. This shows that phenotyping COVID19 patients may aid prognostication, prediction of treatment efficacy, and facilitation of personalized medicine.
In their latest publication, ICU researchers Aron Jansen, prof. Peter Pickkers and dr. @matthijskox82 demonstrate that results of these ex vivo or in vitro assays should be interpreted with caution, as they do not adequately reflect the in vivo immune response.
Our research proposal: PRevention of pAtientβs agItation and enhancement of their SafEty (PRAISE), using a multicomponent pharmacological intervention to reduce physical restraints use in the ICU, is granted @ZonMw (program GGG).

They propose less registration burden by introducing a core set of indicators and more focus on a learning- instead of a "ticking-off" culture.

Learning and improvement should be more central to quality measurements. Researchers Marieke Zegers, @gijs_hesselink and Hans van der Hoeven advocate for this in their article 'Time to see quality measurement differently: focus on reflection, learning and improvement'.
