A 14 member Sri Lankan delegation from the National Defence College π±π°, led by RAdm SP Kathriarachchi rwp, rsp**, usp, Directing Staff (Navy), NDC, visited #IFCIOR.
The delegation was provided with a maritime security scan of the #IOR & briefed on IFC-IOR's information sharing mechanisms and partner linkages towards facilitating timely operational response and enhancing regional #MaritimeSecurity.
#IFCIOR Piracy Overview
Recent piracy activity indicates a broader and more adaptive threat environment across the Western Indian Ocean.
π A total of 9 piracy-related incidents recorded last month, extending from the Puntland coast and Somali Basin to Gulf of Aden approaches off Yemen, indicating expanded operating areas and greater tactical reach.
π Assessment indicates:
* 01 coastal PAG operating in the Somali Basin region.
* 01 offshore, mothership-enabled PAG operating in GoA approaches south of Yemen.
π Attack locations and sequence indicate probable use of dhow/ fishing vessel and skiff combinations, enabling deception, endurance and launch capability away from the coastline.
π 03 hijacks/seizures, 06 suspicious approaches and 03 aborted/thwarted incidents indicate continued hostile intent with preference for opportunistic targeting of merchant shipping.
π The incident on MV AL MASHALLAH 1 highlighted the effectiveness of coordinated maritime response and timely intervention by Indian Navy, EUNAVFOR and JMSDF forces in disrupting piracy activity.
This trend aligns with earlier piracy advisories issued by #IFCIOR and indicates continued requirement for heightened vigilance by merchant shipping.
All vessels transiting the region are advised to:
βοΈ Maintain enhanced lookout and anti-piracy posture
βοΈ Implement BMP (MS) security measures
βοΈ Review transit risk mitigation procedures
βοΈ Report suspicious activity immediately to #IFCIOR ([email protected])

π¨ #IFCIOR | PG CRISIS UPDATE 10/26 | 230530 UTC MAY 26
The #MARSEC environment across the #PersianGulf, #StraitofHormuz and #GulfofOman remains CRITICAL for merchant shipping.
π Since the onset of hostilities, IFC-IOR has monitored 48 maritime security incidents affecting the regional maritime environment. The evolving risk profile continues to remain relevant for commercial vessels underway, at anchor, awaiting transit or operating in proximity to key port approaches and chokepoints.
π Transit through the #StraitofHormuz remains severely reduced and selective, with an assessed reduction of over 90% per day, compared to pre-conflict period.
β οΈ Operationalisation of the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) has introduced additional transit coordination and authorisation considerations for merchant vessels. Limited vessel movements observed during the period do not, at present, indicate restoration of regular or predictable commercial passage through the Strait.
π§ Mine-related concerns in and adjoining the Traffic Separation Scheme, continuing GNSS/ AIS interference and high vessel density at anchorages are further affecting navigational confidence, passage planning and safe conduct of operations in the affected waters.
π‘οΈ Prevailing maritime environment is also influencing voyage approvals, war-risk and insurance considerations, operator confidence and the movement of essential energy cargoes dependent upon safe and predictable passage.
π’ Shipping companies, CSOs and Masters are advised to undertake updated voyage-specific threat assessments, confirm applicable insurance and compliance requirements, maintain navigational redundancy, ensure timely reporting and adhere to BMP (MS) and extant IFC-IOR Maritime Security Advisories.

π¨ #IFCIOR PG CRISIS UPDATE 09/26 | 191200 UTC APR 26 π¨
Despite recent assurances that the #StraitofHormuz remained fully open, the imposition of a highly restricted and controlled transit regime has triggered immediate and widespread disruption across the global shipping network.
The impact was instantaneous - multiple vessels executed abrupt U-turns, with tracking data indicating several vessels reversing course, underscoring the heightened volatility and uncertainty in this critical maritime chokepoint.
β οΈ This development follows recent attacks on vessels transiting the #PersianGulf despite prior transit approvals, highlighting the unpredictability of clearance mechanisms and a sharply elevated operational risk environment.
π The maritime threat environment remains CRITICAL, with traffic already severely constrained (~3β6 transits/day vs ~138 average).
π Assessment:
βοΈ Rapid transition from conditional access to effective denial of transit.
βοΈ Increased route instability and last-minute manoeuvring.
βοΈ Degradation of confidence in deconfliction and clearance frameworks.
βοΈ Elevated collision and navigational risk in congested waters.
π‘ Outlook (24β48 hrs):
The operating environment remains highly fluid, with a credible risk of further escalation.
The cumulative impact is expected to strain global energy flows, disrupt supply chains and sustain elevated war risk premiums.
All shipping companies and masters are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and strictly adhere to BMP (MS) and IFC-IOR advisories.
Threat Level: CRITICAL
