@All_Things_Mavs I’d probably have done it for the pic alone. He’d be a solid flyer too, though I’ve never believed in him as more than an energy guard off the bench
I imagine it’s less what he’s shown and more how Portland will value him. He was a top three pick so who knows how Portland views him right now.
I’d love to take a flyer on him, but I wouldn’t give up much at this point. How do you usually do it for any of our veterans but I wouldn’t give up first round pick draft capital
Which is why I am strongly for Dallas taking on a contract for a rotational player versus signing somebody out right.
Signing a player that might be your seventh ninth Man rotation is highly likely to lose value instantly (the driving a car off a parking lot theory).
Dallas should be looking at players that make $10 to $15 mill and seeing what assets they can acquire to take on those contracts. Those players are likely rotational players that can add some value (maybe even Dallas can rehab that player and get positive value later)
I’d be looking at:
- D. Schroeder $14.8 (2 yrs left)
- C.LeVert $14.8(1 yr left)
- old friend https://t.co/s7PUmibdBR $14.6 (1 yr left)
- B.Portis $14.5 (2 yrs left)
- M.Moody $12.5 (1 yr left)
- D.Finney Smith $13.3 (1 yr left guaranteed)
@MavsHighlights Exactly. This is all leverage, we just don’t know from who but it benefits both the Clippers and Mavericks to have this out there.
A deal doesn’t make sense for DAL but gives Masai sone ground to stand on
If you’re penciling in Dereck Lively to be part of a championship team next year, I know you’re delusional.
This man is years away from being able to be a core part of a team. I love this guy, but next season will be super limited and just trying to keep him healthy throughout the year in a very limited role.
Reason #64 why Dallas should not be trading for Kawai
It’s gotta be a leverage play by Masai.
He wants more for the veterans so he’s pushing out other ways to trade those veterans. There are limited teams that would be interested in PJ, Gaff and Klay for various reasons (contract, age, matching salary).
I’m hoping this is 3-D Chess and he’s getting this out there to actually follow through with the long-term approach
(this could also be the Clippers putting it out there to gain leverage with Toronto, San Antonio, etc)
@bobbykaralla This has to be a leverage play. Masai might not be getting what he wants so he’s getting it out there the vets could go elsewhere. If this indeed true, I’m very happy.
If he’s actually considering it, we need to talk.
@KingCrab1984@Scarr3434@ShamsCharania Co-sign.
And the exact moves my Mavericks should be making now (..ironic with the Kawai news coming out literally right now, though I think this is a leverage play)
@MavsFilmRoom This has to be leverage for other moves. Getting it out there that these veterans could go in other deals ensures other teams who might be interested in a PJW, Klay, Gaff etc will up their offer.
I’m not buying they would actually make this move (nor should they)
This feels like leverage for Masai to get better value and increase the market for Washington Thompson and other veterans.
I’m taking him at his word that he really wants to build the right way (as we should) and ensure we’re built for the long run.
Swinging on Kawai sounds nice, but it’s hugely risky.
The back half of the season isn’t as cut & day as “they went 33-16”, due to March/April games and the lottery motivation by many teams. They are not a 55-win team.
If your goal is to be a 6th-9th seed the next 3 years, sure these moves might not be great. But if you want Charlotte to actually compete, then they couldn’t have made smarter moves.
