Queen bees and worker bees have identical DNA — they're genetic clones from the same type of fertilized egg.

Yet one becomes a long-lived, fertile giant (up to 5+ years, fully developed ovaries), while the other is small, sterile, and lives just weeks doing all the hive work.

The secret?
Epigenetics — how genes are turned on/off without changing the DNA sequence itself.

It all comes down to diet:
- Larvae destined to be queens are fed royal jelly exclusively throughout development.
- Future workers get royal jelly only for the first few days, then switch to a mix of pollen & honey.

Royal jelly triggers epigenetic changes — especially reduced DNA methylation (which normally silences genes) — activating queen-specific gene patterns for bigger size, reproduction, longevity, and different behavior.
