Known for its various benefits, the Black Soldier Fly is an insect which during its larval stage feed on organic waste to produce dried larvae and frass.
A standard for the use of the Black soldier fly larvae in animal feed production and the use of the frass in vegetable production has been developed and adopted in DRC.
This milestone is an achievement for the @IITA_BBEST. the @IITA_BBEST acknowledges the support of @INERADRC and the various ministries for their collaboration.

Big congratulations to our very own Professor Rony Swennen and Dr Alejandro Ortega-Beltran for being selected as members of the 2026 Top Agri-food Pioneers cohort by The @WorldFoodPrize Foundation!
This prestigious recognition celebrates outstanding contributions to transforming food systems worldwide, in honor of the World Food Prize’s 40th anniversary.
“This achievement is due to devoted banana teamwork and support by the IITA services.” - Prof Swennen.
And we all at IITA-@CGIAR couldn’t agree more. Years of dedication, science, and teamwork across crops, research and continents have now earned global recognition.
@alexob36's work has been equally transformative, advancing research on aflatoxin management and food safety, developing innovative biocontrol solutions to reduce contamination in staple crops, and helping safeguard the health and livelihoods of millions of farmers and consumers across Africa and beyond. His science continues to drive impact where it matters most: making food systems safer, more resilient, and more inclusive.
Speaking on the announcement, IITA Director General Dr @simeonehui said, "Their selection is a testament to their scientific excellence, dedication, and the impact of their work on agricultural development and food security. It is also a recognition of the quality of science and innovation that IITA brings to Africa and the world."
Congratulations to Professor Rony Swennen and Dr Alejandro Ortega-Beltran!!!🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

Through the technical support of @IITA_BBEST and Norway through @noradno, Mr Josepsh Munbuthi, the lead of #APIDEC is able to minimise the cost of production and maximise production of fish in his farm.
This is reminder that through the #BSF technology, we can revolutionize livestock farming, while addressing the issue of #wastemanagement.

#BSFFrass, a good choice for vegetables 🥒🥬🥬 and crop farmers.
The vegetables planted on the @IITA_BBEST's field established at Kofisah, Nsawam and fertilized with the BSF Frass has shown the potential of the Frass, to grow vegetables alike poultry manure and NPK.
At the end of the first harvest, farmers witness the ability that the of the Black Soldier Fly Frass (BSFF) to increase yield and improve soil fertility.
Check in the pictures below lettuce and cucumber produced with BSF Frass.

This week @IITA_BBEST Project hosted farmer groups from various areas of Accra at its demonstration field in Kofisah.
This participatory event enabled farmers to see the performance of the BSF frass compared to BSF frass and NPK, and NPK alone.
Farmers who used the BSF frass on the farms attested to its effectiveness to increasing yield and in controlling the growth of weeds.
This activity was done in collaboration with @BNARI7.
Let's talk about waste, biowaste.
Did you know that #biowaste constitutes the larger share of the Municipal Solid waste (MSW) generated in #Africa?
To reduce the amount of biowaste in the landfill, @IITA_BBEST led by @IITA_CGIAR is turning the biowaste challenge into economically valuable products: dried BSF larvae and Frass using the Black Soldier Fly technology.
This initiative is done with the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation
