Did you know that Moskovians started calling themselves Russians (Русские) only about 100 years ago?

Before that, they referred to themselves as Velikorosy (великоросы), while Russkiy (русский) was used as a collective term that included not only Velikorosy, but also Ukrainians (whom they called Malorosy) and Belarusians. You can see this in the image attached to this post (a newspaper showing the 1897 Russian Empire census): it depicts Velikorosy, Belarusians, and Malorosy as three distinct figures, but in the table, they are all grouped under one category: Russkiye. So this term became their unique self-identifier only recently.

Before the 1700s, they called themselves Moskovians, while Ukrainians referred to themselves as Rusyns or Ruthenians (some people in the Carpathian mountains still identify as Rusyns). This makes sense, because the original Rus was in Kyiv���founded at a time when the area now called Moscow was mostly populated by frogs and bears.

Even in the 17th century, Ukrainian Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi called himself “The Hetman of Rus.”

To this day, in Ukrainian, руський [ruskyi] means “ancient Ukrainian,” while росіянин [rosiyanyn] means “Russian” or “Moskovian.”

So, Moskovians stole the name in the 1700s and created a mess. Now, when referring to events from the 10th century, they say “Russian”—when in reality, they are referring to what we now call Ukraine. At best, they are a spin-off of Rus. Politically, they are only about 900 years old, not “over 1100” as they claim. Their first political entity was the Grand Principality of Vladimir, founded in 1125—not Kyivan Rus, founded in the 9th century.

For comparison: Russia claiming it started in Kyiv is like the USA claiming it began as the Kingdom of Wessex in the 6th century. Sure, there’s a historical connection—but it’s absurd to consider Alfred the Great an American king. And yet, Moskovians do just that: they say Volodymyr the Great of Kyiv (c. 958 – 15 July 1015) was “Russian”—in the modern sense of the word.

There is no neutrality in the face of evil.

The russian war and genocide against Ukrainians have changed me. russians have killed three of my friends. They have beheaded, tortured, raped, and castrated thousands of my countrymen. They have destroyed the livelihoods of millions.

I used to be much more tolerant and accepting of different points of view. But now my vision is more black and white. The war has become personal. The pain has become personal.

When your family and friends are bombed every night for four years and your country is invaded, it becomes personal. I think every one of us has lost someone, either on the battlefield or when rockets or Iranian drones struck civilian infrastructure.

Every day and night, there are explosions in the sky. You start your day reading reports about people hospitalized or killed because russian rockets destroyed civilian buildings. And one of those buildings could be where your loved ones or friends live.

So when I meet someone who claims to be neutral regarding the russian war and genocide against the Ukrainian people, I hold them morally responsible for the atrocities committed by russians. There can be no neutrality in the face of evil.

If you choose to remain neutral and silent, that is your choice. But that choice defines who you are. You are a coward, a silent supporter, and history will judge you as such.

To conclude, I want to quote a few people who understood well that there is no neutrality in the face of evil:

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil; God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

Elie Wiesel: “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

Dante Alighieri (paraphrased): “The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.”

I do not think there is a magic potion, but it helps to have a society which strives towards freedom, equality and justice.

The basis of it all is a welfare society, a robust education system, a sense of security and a close attachment to nature.

There is no such thing as a perfectly happy society, but providing some building blocks that give us a chance to live a meaningful life, to help others, will nudge us in the right direction during the journey of life.

Farmlands continue to lose much of their wildlife, bees, birds, insects, amphibians. But each generation measures "normal" nature against what existed in their childhood; not what existed before.

I am the Ukrainian skeleton racer who was wrongfully disqualified from the Olympics last month because of my “Memory Helmet.”

Tonight in Milano-Cortina, the Paralympic Games are opening. The Committee has bizarrely permitted Russian soldier-athletes to participate under the Russian flag.

The head of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) literally stated that they don’t care about what Russian soldiers did in Ukraine. The problem is that we do care.

They are killing Ukrainians on the battlefield, bombing our cities, and committing genocide. Now, with this step of allowing them to compete, the IPC is giving them the opportunity to continue committing genocide by spreading Russian narratives with Russian flags and symbols.

They try to manipulate the situation by pointing out that the movement started after World War II, but during World War II the Olympic Games were cancelled, and German athletes were not invited and did not take part in the Games until 1952.

It looks like the head of the IPC doesn’t know the history of the Olympic and Paralympic movement at all.
What a shame.
This whole story is just getting worse and worse.

🇮🇹 The speech that all of Italy heard. And that the world must hear.
In a country that will host the Olympic Games, Italian Senator and Vice President of the Human Rights Commission Filippo Sensi took the floor and said what should have been said out loud long ago.
He called it a disgrace that the International Olympic Committee disqualified Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych.
Not for doping.
Not for violating fair play.
But for… memory.
For a helmet bearing the faces of Ukrainian athletes — his friends, colleagues, champions — killed by Russia.
The IOC stated that the helmet “did not comply with regulations.”
And then Sensi asked a question that brought silence to the chamber:
Does aggressive war comply with regulations?
Is there a separate technical protocol for it?
The correct angle of a missile strike?
The permissible size of a crater?
An athlete prepares for the Olympics for years.
A Ukrainian athlete trains between air raid sirens, in shelters, under news of the dead.
He overcomes fear, exhaustion, and loss.
And he steps to the start line not only for a medal — but for the right to exist.
And he is suspended… for remembering.
Because memory is the most dangerous substance. It is hard to add to a prohibited list. But apparently, someone would very much like to.
The senator named names. Just a few among more than 650 Ukrainian athletes killed by Russia:
▪️ Yevhenii Malyshev, 19, biathlete — killed in Kharkiv.
▪️ Mariia Lebid, 15 — missile strike in Dnipro.
▪️ Dmytro Sharpar, 25, figure skater — killed in Bakhmut.
▪️ Volodymyr Androsiuk, 22, track and field athlete — also Bakhmut.
▪️ Daria Kurdel, 20 — missile strike in Kharkiv.
▪️ Alina Perehutova, 14 — standing in line for water with her mother in Mariupol.
▪️ Maksym Halinichev, 22, boxer — killed defending Luhansk region.
▪️ Viktoriia Ivashko, 9, judoka — missile strike in Kyiv.
▪️ Kateryna Diachenko, 11, gymnast — airstrike on Mariupol.
▪️ Karina Bakur, 17, world kickboxing champion — shielded her father with her body.
These were the faces Heraskevych wanted to carry with him to the start line.
So that they would “compete” alongside him.
So that their dream would not die with them.
And for that, he was punished.
Because it turns out that the faces of murdered athletes violate regulations.
But their absence on the track does not.
In his speech, Sensi said the most important thing:
The Olympic Committee did not lose an athlete.
It lost its most valuable medal — its conscience.
Sport without memory is just a show.
Sport without humanity is just decoration.
Sport that fears truth is not about peace.
The Olympic movement was born from the ideals of honor, dignity, and unity.
Yet today Ukrainian athletes must prove not only their strength — but their right to remember their fallen.
And if memory becomes a violation of regulations — then the problem is not the helmet.
The world must hear this.
Because silence is also a position.
And indifference is also a choice.
Memory cannot be disqualified.
And conscience cannot be added to a prohibited list.

How to Talk About Ukraine-Correctly

Not “the Ukraine war” but “russia's war against Ukraine.”

Russia's war against Ukraine is black and white-there is a clear victim and aggressor. Language must reflect this.

Not “special military operation” but “russia's illegal, unprovoked and unjustified full-scale military invasion of Ukraine.”

There is nothing special about invading a country to torture, rape, deport, and kills its native population.

3. Not “the Ukraine” but “Ukraine.”

The article 'the' implies Ukraine is a region or territory rather than an independent state. Since Ukraine's independence from the USSR in 1991, the article has been dropped to reflect Ukraine's status as a sovereign nation.

Not “russian liberation, russian liberators” but “russian occupation, russian invaders.

The only thing russian forces have liberated Ukraine from is peace.

Not “adoption of children from Donetsk and Luhansk regions” but “the unlawful kidnapping and deportation of Ukrainian children.”

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and Geneva Conventions strictly prohibits the unlawful, forcible displacement, deportation, or abduction of children during.

A genocide against Ukrainians is unfolding right now.

It already has a name: "Kholodomor" (exhaustion through cold)

This crime is being deliberately committed by russia.

In legal terms, it has a clear definition - genocide.

Under Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, one of the defining acts of genocide is:

"Deliberately inflicting on a group of people conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part."

Many Ukrainian cities - Kyiv foremost among them - have been without electricity, heating, and water for the second week in a row, amid severe frosts.

What does this mean?

It means people are being condemned to death by russia.

This is what is happening:

▪️ Elderly people cannot leave their apartments to buy food or water because elevators do not work - or because they are physically unable to walk down the stairs;

▪️ No communication: mobile phones are dead, there is no way to call for help or an ambulance;

▪️ Sick people cannot use life-sustaining medical equipment because there is no electricity at home;

▪️ Mothers of small kids carry their children and strollers up staircases in high-rise buildings - along with water and food;

▪️ No hot meals and no possibility to cook food at home;

▪️ Sewer system failures, creating critical and dangerous conditions;

▪️ Illness caused by extreme cold and the inability to stay warm;

▪️ Children cannot attend schools because there is no heating. Distance learning is also impossible without electricity;

▪️ Kindergartens are closed, mothers cannot work, earn money to feed their children;

▪️ Stray animals are freezing to death on the streets;

▪️ Even pets are dying from the cold - parrots, aquarium fish, animals kept in terrariums;

▪️ Animals in zoos are freezing;

▪️ Collections of rare plants in Kyiv’s botanical gardens have frozen and died;

▪️ Small businesses are earning nothing, forced to spend money on generators and fuel - causing direct losses to the economy;

▪️ Severe harm to the environment and public health due to the constant operation of massive numbers of generators;

▪️ Public transport functions far worse due to power outages; electric transport does not operate at all, leaving people unable to reach work, doctors, or essential services;

▪️ Burst pipes and freezing temperatures are destroying homes, making them uninhabitable;

▪️ Hospitals are forced to cancel planned surgeries, operating in emergency mode and at full capacity;

▪️ Rates of depression, anxiety disorders, and burnout are sharply increasing.

Russia wants to make large Ukrainian cities uninhabitable.

This is a humanitarian catastrophe deliberately caused by Russia.
