She was the last Battleship launched at Elswick and one of 2 Imperial Japanese Navy British built Battleships visit Britain from Japan.
In 1921, she and sister ship KATORI 香取 visited Britain and Europe on board Crown Prince HIROHITO, Emperor SHOWA.

Date: February 25, 1925. Location: Pacific south of the Island of Oahu, HI, USA. Event: IJN coastal defence ship (former armored cruiser) Yakumo 八雲 is approaching Honolulu during her 5 month-long training cruise to North America for naval cadets. Current status: Scrapped in 1946-47, lifespan of 50 years.
Date: July 22, 1908. Location: Maizuru 舞鶴市, Japan. Event: Former armored cruiser Bayan of the Russian Navy's First Pacific Squadron commences her service with the IJN Training Squadron as Aso 阿蘇 upon completion of her 3 year-long repairs at the Maizuru Naval Arsenal 舞鶴海軍工廠. Current status: Intact wreck at appr. 34°32′ N, 139°56′ E, depth of ca. 1600 m.
Date: February 22, 1900. Location: Kure 呉市, Japan. Event: Battleship Yashima 八島 is moored in the Kure Naval Arsenal during a break from gunnery exercises by the IJN Standing Fleet 常備艦隊. Current status: Partially scrapped wreck at appr. 38°34′ N, 121°40′ E, depth of ca. 25 m.
