I can’t wrestle - Excuse? It would interfere with my chances of going to a service academy...fact? Admissions boards hold wrestlers with good grades in high regard.
Parents: Encourage children to communicate directly with their coach. It’s a skill they will need for a lifetime, so help them develop it now. They need to learn that parents can’t fight their battles for them & that 3rd party communication won’t get them very far in this world.
Players: You’re not entitled, so don’t expect things to be given to you. If you want something, go earn it! Go get it! Whining about it won’t change it. Only hard work will do that. If you’re not willing to work, then you’re satisfied with the way things are. It’s your choice.
Coaches: Don’t ever doubt that your players need you. As a role model, confidant, parental figure & mentor. They will need you when you least expect it. Will you be there for them? Are you forming that kind of relationship with your kids? If you aren’t, you’re not doing it right.
You find out a lot about kids’ toughness & character with how they respond to conditioning. Are you the player who says “I’m hurt/sick. I have a test/homework. I have a game/plans this weekend”? Or are you the player who says “I’m ready!”? It’s obvious who’s serious & who isn’t!
