24.02.2022 driving down the empty road into Kyiv, seeing everyone fleeing and not knowing if we'd be trapped inside. The nightmare for Ukrainians hasn't stopped, it's just morphed into a thudding normal. So much respect for my colleagues still covering it.
Along with so many talented colleagues, I was laid off by The Washington Post today. The Berlin bureau is closed. Reporting for The Post from Germany has been an absolute hono(u)r. I will miss you all. Herzlichen Dank an alle.
or a 'sad day' for the readers who truly appreciate the type of moral compass that WaPo reporters/editors have repeatedly shown on so many issues (!), (unlike some competitors). This is a f tragedy for the western world.
He has repeatedly starved and destabilised the paper, when, with his wealth, he could have created something that truly rivalled the NYT. This isn't just a 'sad day' for 300~ reporters,

Our deepest condolences to all who knew him💔

Well worth reading. I would add the need to forget about feeding the west 2022-esque 'inspiring stories' and find the political guts/comms to intro the difficult EU integration reforms, (that could generate much-needed cash for the state). https://t.co/AuuuMxZ76O
BBC’s Jeremy Bowen: Israelis don’t want us to film outside the window at the devastation in Gaza…communities in the north of Gaza are flat, there’s nothing left…Israel will not allow reporters, like myself, to enter Gaza to report the story and they don’t want us to see it
'As a result, war strategy will focus not so much on capturing territory as on depleting the enemy’s resources and capabilities, creating chaos and ultimately eroding the nation’s capacity to resist.'

Lastly, given the chains of companies and countries involved & the fact that the real price of goods is determined by a select and closed group, the risk of things going wrong, (or worse), is high.

The other takeaway is just how complicated weapons procurement is. From components and raw materials to manufacturing, transportation. And the goods have to weave their way through a geopolitical nightmare, with many countries not wanting to be seen selling to either side.
