This is the World Humanoid Robot Games, running live at Beijing's Ice Ribbon stadium through August 26, with 666 teams from 16 countries and an estimated 50 million people watching across 80 countries.
Last year's edition was mostly spectacle: robots faceplanting in the high jump, pile-ups on the soccer field. This year, 51 events test real capability — sprinting, weightlifting, football, street dance — and every 100m runner has to navigate the entire race with zero remote control. Fall down, and it has to get up alone or get disqualified.
96% of the entries are still Chinese teams. But Germany, Japan, the US, and even Brazil sent their own squads this time.
A year ago this competition was a novelty act. Now it's basically a live benchmark for which country's robots can actually do the work.

The scale is already visible on the ground. This week Beijing hosted 2,056 humanoid robots from 666 teams in 16 countries at the World Humanoid Robot Games — sprinting, boxing, sorting medicine, folding laundry.
But the money is running way ahead of revenue. One startup, Figure, raised at a $39 billion valuation — roughly 22x what Unitree, the industry's actual revenue leader, made in all of 2025.
The real target isn't sprint times. It's the scenario-based events these Games run alongside sport — factory floors, hospitals, hotels, homes. That's where investors expect the bet to pay off.
If capital keeps flowing this fast into hardware that still struggles with basic tasks, the next 24 months decide who was right.
