يلقى أكثر من 840,000 شخص حتفهم سنوياً بسبب حالات صحية مرتبطة بالمخاطر النفسية والاجتماعية.

وترتبط هذه المخاطر النفسية والاجتماعية في العمل بشكل أساسي بأمراض القلب والأوعية الدموية والاضطرابات النفسية.

لا تقتصر المخاطر النفسية-الاجتماعية على مكان العمل، بل تمتد آثارها إلى ما بعده.

ويُقدَّر أثرها الاقتصادي بخسارة تعادل 1.37 في المائة من الناتج المحلي الإجمالي العالمي سنويًا. ورغم أن الكلفة البشرية تظل الأهم، فإن الكلفة الاقتصادية لا يمكن تجاهلها.
