Recently, H. Greg McDonald visited our collections. As an expert in giant ground sloths, he reidentified some fossils as different species. The bone on the left is from Megalonyx. It had been identified as Paramylodon, shown on the right. Note the differences. #FossilFriday

#OTD in 1975, monarch butterflies were designated as Illinois’ state insect, thanks to a proposal from a 3rd-grade class at Decatur’s Dennis School. After the bill passed, the children watched Gov. Walker sign it into law!
