Great event w/ @SLNazario tonight! Thanks to partners @AJCchicago @ChicagosMayor @NIJC & everyone who came to hear about #RefugeeKids

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

@ChicagosMayor Office of New Americans dir Tonantzin Carmona: Chicago doesn't turn our backs on children #RefugeeKids event w/ @SLNazario

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

@SLNazario: impossible to get pro-bono attorneys for every #Refugee child who needs it. Gov-t needs to step up & provide legal reps

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

@SLNazario: very little coordination nationally to deal with #RefugeeKids; education, govt, clergy, etc getting together.

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

@SLNazario: kids being forced to present asylum cases w/out $ for attorneys; few kids are getting relief through 50% are eligible

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

@SLNazario: We have a moral obligation to help #RefugeeKids; and to look at root causes in Central America.

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

@SLNazario observed huge changes in Honduras: 4 out of 5 cocaine flights landing there; rising violence; rising #s of kids trying to escape

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

Today: youngest kids are 7yo traveling on top of freight train La Bestia thru 4 countries to escape violence

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

Author @SLNazario: women leaving home & kids to be able to send $ to feed them; kids set off on horrific journey to find mom #RefugeeKids

Would rather have alternatives to detention, people in community than in what amounts to private prisons #ImmigrantJustice #fight4families

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

@NIJC's @jenniferinparis: alternatives to detention work! Especially for women & children, family detention is inappropriate & traumatic.

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

# of kids coming to US decreasing, but no change in C America. Violence & threats pervasive; people staying in Mexico instead of going to US

[Illinois Women 4 CIR @ILWomen4CIR]

US eliminated family detention in 2009; new ctrs w/ 6K beds. Officers not trained in dealing with #sexualabuse victims & kids. #IL4Families
