WILDFIRE UPDATE
A fast-moving wildfire in Garfield County has burned an estimated 315 acres, destroyed a home and an outbuilding, and forced evacuations south of Rifle.
According to Colorado River Fire Rescue, crews were first dispatched to the Dry Creek Fire around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday near Gage Road, roughly four miles south of the Rifle Garfield County Airport. Strong winds rapidly pushed the fire east and southeast, allowing it to spread across hundreds of acres within hours.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for residents along Gage Road and in the Grass Mesa area. Officials said evacuations remained in effect Wednesday due to extreme fire behavior and concerns that afternoon winds could further intensify fire activity.
Fire officials confirmed that one home and one outbuilding were destroyed. Crews remained in the area overnight working to protect threatened structures and critical infrastructure, though authorities have not released the number of homes still at risk.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The wildfire comes as state health officials have issued an air quality advisory for portions of western and southern Colorado due to wildfire smoke. The advisory covers Delta, Dolores, Eagle, Garfield, Gunnison, Hinsdale, La Plata, Mesa, Mineral, Montezuma, Montrose, Ouray, Pitkin, Rio Blanco, Saguache, San Juan and San Miguel counties and remains in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday.
Health officials advised residents to stay indoors when smoke becomes heavy and to limit outdoor activity. People with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, older adults, young children and other sensitive groups are urged to take extra precautions.
Officials warned that extremely dry conditions continue across the region and that any spark could quickly develop into a dangerous wildfire.
UPDATE
Jefferson County officials temporarily closed Apex Park in Golden Monday morning due to what they described as "aggressive bear activity."
Just after 6 a.m., Jeffco Parks and Open Space announced that the nearly 800-acre park, which includes trails leading toward Lookout Mountain, would be closed while Colorado Parks and Wildlife monitors the situation.
Officials have not released details about what specific behavior prompted the closure or how long the park will remain closed. FOX31 reported it has reached out to CPW for additional information.
State and local officials had already warned last month that drought conditions and extreme heat could increase bear activity and push bears into more populated areas as they search for food.
Bear sightings were reported in Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Louisville, and as far east as Keenesburg during May.
Anyone planning to hike or bike in the area should be aware that Apex Park remains closed until further notice.
Governor hopeful Phil “hug-a-thug” Weiser says car thieves shouldn’t face real consequences until they’ve stolen 3 or 4 cars in about 3 months.
Let’s take a look to see how this is playing out…
