Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti died 29 years ago today.

In a 1976 interview with Spear magazine, he spoke about his vision for a truly independent Africa that empowered all its people.

He said, "Let us go and re-read the black man's history and adopt the ideology of Pan-Africanism. It entails the recognition of the equality of man; it gives everybody the chance to try out his brain, to make himself a better man; it sees that everybody has enough of the good things of life and that we, as Africans, love one another.

"The facts that make me original today are facts I gather from books on true African history. I know myself. You will never know where you are going unless you know where you are coming from. You must discover yourself.

"Africans today have been put where we are by colonialism, slave trade and brainwashing tactics of foreign religion. This is why we need a new ideology.

"Our government should fight for the abolition of borders in Africa and for the adoption of a uniform currency, of the same value, all through Africa."

JUSTICE DELIVERED: TROOPS ARREST KILLERS OF SOLDIER, RECOVER STOLEN WEAPONS

Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested three suspects linked to the ambush that k!11£d a soldier and injured another in May. The arrest was the result of a coordinated interstate operation spanning Rivers, Delta, and Imo states.

THE SUSPECTS:

♦️ Albert Tony (aka "Chiboy")
♦️ Temple Eburua (aka "Marathon")
♦️ Vitalis Eburua (aka "Onowu")

They fled to Port Harcourt, then relocated to Oleh, Delta State, with the help of an associate, Mr. Abire, who was arrested on July 30. He led troops to the suspects, who were apprehended in a dawn raid on July 31.

RECOVERED FROM THE SUSPECTS:

✅ 1 AK‑47 rifle (stolen from slain soldier).

✅ 2 AK‑47 magazines.

✅ 1 FN rifle & 2 FN magazines.

✅ 3 additional AK‑47 rifles.

✅ 9 AK‑47 magazines.

✅ 1 pistol with magazine.

✅ 194 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammo.

✅ 45 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammo.

✅ 1 fragmentation jacket

This operation is a major breakthrough not just in arresting the killers of a soldier, but in recovering the service weapons stolen from him. The message is clear: attack our troops, and we will hunt you across state lines.

In 1976, DRUM magazine documented jungle justice across Nigeria, with crowds beating people accused of theft or other crimes without trial, investigation or evidence. Some, like the young man pictured here, survived the mob justice, but many others did not.
