IMPAC is attending a meeting today at the European Parliament on the plight of Christians in Pakistan, focusing on the forced abduction, conversion, and marriage of underage girls.

This is a systemic crisis. Reports indicate that around 1,000 girls from religious minority communities (roughly 75% Hindu, 25% Christian) are abducted each year, forcibly converted to Islam, and married to Muslim men - often much older. Many victims are under 16, some as young as 12 or 13.

Pakistan’s law is clear: Section 375 of the Pakistan Penal Code defines sexual intercourse with a girl under 16 as rape (with or without consent). Child marriage restraint laws also exist in several provinces, setting the minimum age at 18. Yet in these forced conversion cases, perpetrators are almost never prosecuted.

Courts frequently accept the “conversion” and “marriage” documents as valid, pressure girls to claim it was voluntary, and return minors to their abductors — despite clear evidence of coercion and falsified ages.

The case of 13-year-old Christian girl Maria Shahbaz is emblematic: abducted in July 2025, forcibly converted and married to a 30-year-old man. Despite her family’s evidence that she was a minor, Pakistan’s Federal Constitutional Court upheld the marriage earlier this year.

The European Parliament recently adopted a resolution strongly condemning these abuses, highlighting Maria’s case, and calling on Pakistan to investigate, prosecute perpetrators, ensure safe returns, and create a national mechanism to protect minority girls. This was due to months of hard work by @hjaruissen.

Religious freedom and child protection must be upheld. These girls deserve justice - not impunity for their abusers.

Yesterday’s seminar at the Hebrew University, organized by the Truman Institute and sponsored by the @EUinIsrael @EUpalestinians proved again that open and public Israeli-Palestinian dialogue is still possible — and deeply needed. Important discussions with EU Ambassador to Israel @MichaelMannEU and @EUSR_MEPP highlighted both Europe’s enormous potential and its deep strategic contradictions.
The EU could become the most relevant international player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But today it suffers from a severe lack of leadership and political courage.
My criticism focused on two deeply destructive European policies:

1- Europe’s unconditional, public, and continuous endorsement of Mahmoud Abbas — a leader entering his third decade without democratic legitimacy while Palestinians remain denied presidential and legislative elections.

2- Europe’s strange fear of supporting open public dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians. Instead of investing in visible public engagement like yesterday’s seminar, the EU and leading member states such as Germany and Sweden continue funding closed “Chatham House” style conferences in Geneva and other European cities— conversations with no public accountability, no transparency, and no impact on public opinion.

Peace will not emerge from secret rooms filled with the same old faces. It will only emerge when Israelis and Palestinians are capable of speaking publicly, honestly, and directly to each other in front of their own societies.

I admit that I never watched any of the respective documentaries to protect my mental health. But I deeply respect the courage and perseverance of those who gathered and especially of those who witnessed the horrors of 7th October.

And I can only bow deeply before Holocaust-survivors who decided - faced with similar kind of horrific experience - to counter inhumanity with humanity.
