I am a concerned Indian-origin American and observer of India’s growing diaspora presence in the United States. With due respect, I wish to bring to your attention a number of recent events that have caused concern among American communities, law enforcement, and Indian-American community who uphold the highest values, integrity and civic responsibility.

Over the past year, several reports and incidents have surfaced involving visa-fraud and public disturbances linked to individuals/groups identifying as Indian nationals. These incidents, though not representative of the vast majority of law-abiding Indian citizens, have unfortunately begun to cast a shadow over India’s reputation and the credibility of our diaspora in the U.S.

1. Visa Fraud and Criminal Activities
There have been increasing reports of H-1B and F-1 visa misuse, including fraudulent job placements, individuals on the “bench” without legitimate employment, and some engaging in financial scams targeting American senior citizens. Such activities not only undermine U.S. immigration laws but also damage India’s image as a trusted source of skilled professionals and students.
Recommendations:
The Embassy may consider collaborating with U.S. authorities, Indian student associations, and Indian IT firms to educate visa holders about compliance obligations. Establish a reporting and monitoring mechanism for unethical visa sponsorships and fraudulent recruiters.
Issue periodic advisories reminding Indian nationals that visa misuse can lead to criminal prosecution in the U.S. and potential revocation of Indian passports.
2. Public Disorder and Cultural Event Misconduct
Recently, some Indian nationals have been involved in vandalizing public venues, disrupting traffic with unauthorized processions and car rallies, and leaving public areas littered after large celebrations such as Diwali and movie releases. Instances of noise disturbances from loudspeakers and fireworks in residential neighborhoods have also been reported.
Such incidents not only disturb local communities but also contradict the values of respect, discipline, and harmony that Indian culture traditionally upholds.
Recommendations:
The Embassy and Consulates could work with community organizations to issue public advisories on responsible celebrations and compliance with local laws.
Encourage self-regulation and civic accountability within Indian associations.
Promote awareness campaigns emphasizing community harmony, respect for public property, and adherence to U.S. municipal regulations.
Take a break3. Maintaining Goodwill and Strengthening U.S.–India Relations
To preserve the longstanding goodwill between the people of India and the US, and to counter any growing perceptions of “Indian” or “Hindu” hate resulting from the misconduct of a few individuals, visible steps by the GOI and its missions abroad would send a strong message of accountability and integrity.
Recommendations:
Issue a public press release from the Embassy condemning all such acts of fraud, public disturbance, and lawlessness that bring disrepute to India and its citizens abroad.
Issue a public advisory reminding Indian passport holders that a passport is a privilege, not a right, and that the GOI reserves the authority to suspend or revoke passports of individuals found guilty of criminal or unethical conduct abroad. Emphasize that these actions are intended not to single out communities, but to protect India’s global reputation and preserve the mutual trust and friendship between India and the U.S.

The Indian diaspora has contributed immensely to America’s economy, culture, and innovation landscape; however, we must remain vigilant in upholding our shared reputation for integrity and civility.
