Congratulations to Dr Zamani Cele, on his extraordinary achievement as a finalist for the TW Kambule-NSTF: Researcher Award of the prestigious NSTF-South32 Awards – the Science Oscars of South Africa (SA). The Awards recognise outstanding contributions to #science, #engineering, #technology (SET) and #innovation in SA since 1998.

He is a Senior Researcher: @CSIR.

Dr Cele has dedicated most of his post-doctoral years to researching and developing macromolecular antimicrobials derived from biopolymers to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He chemically modifies biopolymers by adding functional groups that enhance their biocidal properties as alternatives to traditional antibiotics. AMR occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites develop resistance to antimicrobial drugs, making treatments ineffective. This leads to more challenging infections, increased illness, disability, and even death. Unlike conventional small-molecule antibiotics, Dr Cele is focused on creating macromolecular antimicrobial agents that disrupt microbial cell membranes physically, thereby lowering the chances of pathogens developing resistance.
