Just knowing he was here was enough. Ana knew that Aramis felt her frustration, understood it. But she could not go against her husband.

Not ever.

“Be here, with me? I . . . I would like to find an opportunity for you to truly see the Dauphin.”

[𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫, 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐬 † 𝕽𝖊𝖓é @gallantatheart]

He knows what he wants to say, and were it anyone else or another situation he might have uttered the words — something about the king's ego and fragility.

But he doesn't.
Instead he just nods his head. Slow and understanding.

All this talk of war. They're all preparing -

“I do not like being so worried . . . But war with Spain is on the horizon. . . And I am forbidden from writing to my brother, to try and broker a peace.”

It worried her, the growing tensions between Spain and France. Her son was so young, he would be at risk in a war.

The Queen's hand is squeezed back, gentle and as reassuring as hers was. Once and then again. Her hand is then lifted and pressed to his chest, where her crucifix still hangs (as always). Extra reassurance. He's always there.

"I do not like seeing you looking so worried."

As soon as his hand was offered, she took it, giving it a gentle squeeze to reassure herself and himself.

They were safe, in this moment, with very little chance of anyone discovering them. That was all they could ask for.

"She always is."

Thank God for their friend; if not for her, they might not have these moments like this. However short that they may be.

He notices the hesitation in her and holds out his hand; she can take it if she wishes, there is no pressure.

Without hesitating, she crossed the room to stand before him, one hand hesitantly moving towards him before pulling away.

Scared to make contact. Scared to cross that boundary.

“You . . . You arrived safely? I trust Constance was good help.”

There is worry that fills him too; more so for her than for himself. But all that worry falls away when he enters through the secret hallway and is faced with his Ana again. The one he is loyal too. The one who has his heart.

The entranceway is closed behind him, cutting -

To say Ana was worried that evening was an understatement.

Even though she trusted Constance, part of her feared someone would learn of this meeting. Would question the Dauphin’s parentage.

Still, she came. Waiting until the secret door opened and Aramis entered.

"Until later,"

He nods his head, a small bow, and gives her hand a squeeze bye. Then he's disappearing again. Until later.

“Good.”

Her smile was brief, before she fell quiet.

When she spoke next, she’d returned to French, rather than Spanish.

“Until later, my loyal musketeer.”

"I am always going to be your friend."

She will always have someone on her side in him, no matter what, he is her ally.

"You need not worry about that."

“You were my first friend here, Aramis. My only friend for some time. You will never know how much that means to me.”

To hear him call her Ana, her given name, it sent a flutter through her heart.

A language they share, and can spend these moments in. It's the one his response comes through in also.

"You do not need to thank me, Ana. I do it because I love you, and you are my queen."

For a moment, she simply relished in this, in having his hands holding hers.

When she spoke next, she was speaking in Spanish, a language she knew he knew.

“Thank you. For all you do for me.”

"Of course."

What a Godsend Constance is.

"Of course."

Her hands are lifted again. Another kiss, his eyes shutting as he does. Just for the brief moment.

Anne was quiet for the briefest moment, before she spoke, softly.

“Yes. I wish it. Speak with Constance. She’ll help us. She hardly leaves my side now.”

They just have to pray that it doesn't get to that point, and pray hard.

"I shall try to find some time away to see you, tonight if you wish?"

Anne mourned having a relationship with him, mourned their youth where they were not divided by politics.

She knew this war would take her loyal musketeers away from her and that worried her as well.

“I have missed you as well.”

"I fear the rumors of war stirring may be true..."

The words are more spoken thoughts than anything, but a little shake of his head seems to push them back for the moment. He'd rather not talk of it, not when he's got this moment with her.

"I have missed you, greatly."

His words brought a flush to her cheeks, a brief moment of weakness before him. How she’d missed him, missed these peaceful moments.

“The King has been anxious of late, I cannot begin to imagine how busy that has made you. But it is wonderful to see you again.”

Anne's hands are taken between his own and quickly lifted so he may press his lips to them. They only have a moment, this passing pause in time.

"Your husband and Paris keeps me busy, I am sorry I haven't been around much."
