It is the 12th & final day of Fishmas! Today is the Smallmouth Bass. The most popular game fish in the river, they are strong & fun to catch. They aren’t very tolerant of pollution, so their relatively abundant presence in the White River is indicative of improving water quality.

On the 11th Day of Fishmas, Buddy the Bass gives to us the Bluntnose Minnow! These little fish are only a few inches long, have a light olive-colored top half with silver bottom half, separated by a line of darker scales that end in a black dot near the rear fin.

Buddy the Bass is celebrating the 10th day with the Golden Redhorse. This gold-colored fish is usually around 12-18" in length & weighs a couple of lbs. They can be found on a rocky or gravel river bottom foraging for food with their sucker-type mouths.

On this 9th day of Fishmas, Buddy the Bass focused on the Striped Shiner. This little guy is typically 3-5 inches long and is aptly named given the shiny, silvery scales with dark stripes. The striped shiner prefers clear water with rocky (not muddy) bottoms.

It’s the 8th Day of Fishmas and Buddy the Bass gave to me … a Flathead Catfish!
These catfish have a mottled brown color and live in the deeper pools with muddy bottoms and murky water. The Indiana record Flathead weighed nearly 80 pounds!

Happy Day Seven of the 12 Days of Fishmas! On this 7th day, Buddy the Bass is teaching about the Freshwater Drum. This little drummer (it makes a drum noise by vibrating its swim bladder!) typically weighs 5-15 lbs, but the IN record is 30 lbs! These silvery fish like deep water.

It’s cheat day! Mussels aren’t fish, but they are vital to the river ecosystems. These shelled creatures can grow up to 7” wide & need a cobble river bottom. They depend on fish to expand their range, shooting larvae into the gills of fish, which fall out up & downstream.

Happy 12 Days of Fishmas! On the 5th day of Fishmas, Buddy is teaching about the Black Crappie, a beautiful fish with a pattern of black spots. They typically grow to about 8'', although can more than double that size. They like areas with vegetation & sandy or muddy bottoms.

On the 4th day of fishmas, Buddy the Bass gave to me… a blue gill!
The bluegill can be distinguished by its power-blue coloring along its lower jaw & gills w/ a solid black earflap. They aren’t too picky about habitat, but do like aquatic vegetation to hide in.

It’s the 3rd day of the 12 Days of Fishmas & Buddy the Bass gave to us … the Channel Catfish! The most common catfish can grow up to 50 lbs, although most often they are around 5 lbs & two feet in length. As bottom-dwellers, they prefer deeper water, especially during the day.

On the second day of the 12 Days of Fishmas, we focused on the Largemouth Bass. A popular game fish in the White River, these bass can reach a length of 16 inches or more. They like calm warmer waters with aquatic plants and logs to hide in.

It's Day 1 of the 12 Days of Fishmas!
Today's fish is the Redear Sunfish. This fish can grow to around 10" in length & prefers warmer, calm water with aquatic plants & logs. Typically not found in the main fast-flowing river channel, preferring quieter waters in protected coves.
