Thabo Mbeki started hurting the ANC's strength long before 1994.

He knew Chris Hani was likely to become the ANC's deputy president (with Nelson Mandela as president), but Mbeki strongly fought against it and stopped it from happening.

After Mandela's time as president, Winnie Mandela was expected to become ANC deputy president.

But Mbeki didn't like her, so he made sure she was pushed aside.

When Mbeki lost to Jacob Zuma at the Polokwane conference, he tried to damage the ANC by helping start a new party called COPE.

All this shows Thabo Mbeki has been the biggest threat to the ANC from inside, but people didn't notice.
