I will never forget a woman we lost in the labor ward because she wouldn't accept blood.

She left her newborn without a mom.

Think of this new policy as "do not eat a burger."

Whole blood is the assembled burger: bread, meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, all stacked together and handed to you as one thing.

That is still prohibited.

Now let's take the burger/blood apart.

The meat on its own is the red cells.

The bread is the plasma.

The cheese is the platelets.

The lettuce and tomato are the white cells.

Under the new policy, you can order any of these separately, and you can even order all four on the same tray.

You just cannot order them assembled.

From a medical standpoint, the components together are the whole unit.

A patient given red cells, plasma, and platelets in the standard trauma ratio is receiving, in effect, reconstituted whole blood.

So a doctor looking at the tray sees a deconstructed burger.

The organization looks at the same tray and says, "No burger was served."

As confusing as that may sound, I hope it means we stop losing lives to the "no blood" policy.
