Through our global membership, we fight to eradicate torture and offer health-based rehabilitation services to help torture survivors rebuild their lives.
#Colombia has been experiencing a sociopolitical conflict for over half a century, which has fractured many of the country's diverse communities. IRCT member El Centro de Atención Psicosocial @capscol_co supports survivors in reclaiming their life projects.
A commemorative photo was taken featuring the members of the General Assembly of the Association of Detainees and Missing of Sednaya Prison during their first visit to the prison after its liberation. They all endured bitter years of suffering in its depths and darkness, witnessing firsthand the worst crimes committed by its administration and guards. They also lived through the infamous siege that occurred in 2008.
IMLU held a training needs assessment with @NPSOfficial_KE, @DCI_Kenya, to strengthen police training and capacity. IMLU emphasized that training should focus on attitudes and behaviour change and skills transfer. This joint effort strengthens professionalism and accountability.
Why is the issue of #torture integral to the fight for #democracy? And why does it matter to young people today? Take two minutes out from your busy Monday to listen to the explanation from Wangechi Kahuria, Executive Director of Independent Medico-Legal Unit (@IMLU_org ) #Kenya.
♦️The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) strongly condemns the escalation of settler attacks, the latest of which involved the burning of a mosque and a commercial facility over the past few days. This attack is part of a broader violence supported by the Israeli government across the West Bank.
These two crimes are part of a wider strategy of violence carried out by settlers under the protection of the Israeli Occupation Forces. They represent a direct extension of the genocidal, ethnically cleansing, and apartheid policies imposed on Palestinians. These incidents are not isolated, but rather components of a systematic campaign aimed at displacing the indigenous population and forcibly subjugating the land.

How to assess #Israel's policy to #torture Palestinians in its custody? A consequence of a "system of colonial domination" as @DrSamahJabr and Maria Helbich describe? Are they correct? Make up your own mind by reading #TortureJournal 👉 https://t.co/uSOvBBSlvz

Yesterday, @TheLGCF, with funding from the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims @IRCT, hosted a Validation Workshop on the Peer-Based Psychosocial Support Manual. It was an insightful session where key stakeholders went through the draft framework and reviewed

Israeli forces weaponize gender in torture of Palestinians from #Gaza.
DIGNITY’s Grant Shubin shows how gender roles are exploited — emasculating men, sexualizing women, and targeting reproductive health.

Denial of medical care by doctors to patients in need is a fundamental breach of the foundations of medical ethics and of international #HumanRights law.
Yet in testimonies gathered by field researchers and members of the legal team at the Palestinian Centre for #HumanRights, multiple Palestinian former detainees arrested by #Israel between October 2023 and October 2024, reported denial of medical care by Israeli doctors.
The report '#Torture and #Genocide' found that "[a]lthough detainees reported both acute (e.g., fractured bones after beatings) and chronic (e.g., diabetes) medical conditions, most were denied treatment or only given Acamol (Paracetamol). Some were not provided care despite symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and difficulty breathing."
In its ground-breaking report, PCHR analyses the systematic torture and other ill-treatment of Palestinians from Gaza as a component of Israel’s ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.

🇲🇽 Weaving threads of resistance in #Mexico
In 2024, survivors of torture and family members came together for the first National Meeting of Victims of Torture, led by local organisations like CEPAD, Fundar, and the Red Nacional de Peritos, with OMCT’s support.
Torture survivors and families shared their struggles with impunity, stigma, and repression — but also the roots of their resilience: family, community, faith, and collective action.
💬 “Despite the processes of pain, this document reflects the affection, solidarity and those threads woven to resist this path," – torture survivor and participant.

Field researchers and members of the legal team at the Palestinian Centre for #HumanRights interviewed 100 Palestinian former detainees arrested by Israel in #Gaza between October 2023 and 2024.
The report 'Torture and Genocide' found that in addition to severe deprivation of food, detainees were subjected to violence and humiliating conditions related to access to food and water.
Interviewees were forced to eat and/or drink while handcuffed and/or blindfolded. Some detainees were kicked, punched, or beaten with sticks for asking for food and/or water. Soldiers would place food and snacks in front of detainees which they could not reach while laughing and insulting them, or even eating in front of the hungry detainees.
