The drafters of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights extensively reviewed approximately 50 contemporary constitutions to ensure the comprehensive inclusion of rights from diverse cultures and nations. Notably, the influence of the United States Declaration of Independence and the Four Freedoms proclaimed by U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt in 1941 was significant. President Roosevelt defined essential human freedoms as freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear, explaining that 'freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere.' These principles served as great inspiration for the UDHR's provisions. However, it's essential to recognize that while the UDHR was influenced by documents like the United States Declaration of Independence and the Four Freedoms, it transcends any single national or cultural tradition, aiming to articulate fundamental human rights that apply to all people regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or background.

How can I teach human rights when I have never studied them? What if I can’t answer people’s questions?
Few of us had an opportunity to study human rights during our formal schooling. This is part of the problem. The foundation of all learning is inspiring interest, curiosity, and personal connection to the subject matter. Research shows that people of all ages remember and integrate best when participating in their learning.

You don’t have to know all the answers to facilitate human rights education; you have to know how to help people, including yourself, look for answers. "Experts" can evoke passivity, boredom, or a sense of incompetence, especially if they present human rights from a strictly legal perspective. You need not be an expert with a legal background. You do need to be willing to be part of the learning process.

Therefore, the most effective educational techniques in human rights education offer a high level of active participation, using role-plays, debates, discussions, drama, and small group work.
