@DEVILOFMALICE {I glance down at the sweatshirt, then back at you with significantly less attitude.}
Okay, now I feel a little bad for telling you to mind your business. A /little/.
Jet lag has me wide awake before the sun, lying in my own bed and wondering why everything feels unfamiliar when I’ve only been gone a couple weeks.
The house is too quiet. No microphones. No producer pulling anyone for a chat. Nobody yelling about a text before I’ve even opened both eyes.
By seven, I’ve given up on going back to sleep. My suitcase is still by the bedroom door, but I ignore it and pull a matching sweatsuit from my closet instead. If I’m going to be emotionally unstable in public, I can at least be comfortable.
My usual coffee place looks exactly the same. That shouldn’t feel as comforting as it does, but after weeks of waking up somewhere designed to keep me confused, I could kiss the little crooked chalkboard by the window.
The girl behind the counter recognizes me halfway through my order. I can see it happen on her face, but all she says is, “Welcome home,” before handing me my cup.
I nearly cry over coffee creamer at eight in the morning.
Outside, I take the smallest table and turn my phone facedown beside my bag. It’s been buzzing since I landed. Interview requests. Messages from people I haven’t heard from in years. Strangers asking about Leo, Elio, Javier and decisions I still don’t fully understand myself.
Then there are the men.
Apparently leaving a dating show single turns your DMs into open auditions. I’ve gotten dinner invitations, marriage proposals and multiple offers from complete strangers willing to get on a plane.
Most of them are easy to ignore.
The dangerous part is one of them actually made me curious enough to answer.
I flip my phone back over, stare at the newest message for a second, then reach for my coffee instead.
It is entirely too early to start making questionable decisions again.
