As India prepares to host the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, it is worth remembering where India stood within the original BRIC economies.

Between 2004 and 2014, India’s economy did grow, but it was falling behind its BRIC peers. China’s economy expanded by roughly 440%, Brazil’s by 267% and Russia’s by 223%, while India’s expanded by about 182%. The problem was not that India was growing; it was that others were growing faster and pulling further ahead.

A decade later, the picture is markedly different. India has crossed the $4 trillion mark, is among the world’s largest economies, and remains the fastest-growing major economy, with real GDP growth of 7.8% in the April–June 2026 quarter.

That is the context in which India enters the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, not as an economy struggling to keep pace with its peers, but as one of the principal engines of global growth.

The lesson from the past is simple: economic size matters, but the pace at which a nation closes the gap matters even more.
