🌍 Trade unionists from around the world gathered in Geneva during the International Labour Conference #ILC to stand up for democracy, human rights, and trade union freedoms.
📣 We demand the release of all imprisoned trade unionists and democracy activists in Belarus, Myanmar, and Hong Kong. No worker should face repression for defending rights, justice, and freedom.
✊Together, we raise our voices to #FightForDemocracy!

🕯️ A candle for memory. A candle for freedom.
On 4 June, we remember those who were killed in Beijing in 1989 while demanding democracy and freedom.
We also remember those imprisoned today for keeping that memory alive.
✊ Lee Cheuk Yan, who stood in solidarity with the students and workers of Tiananmen in 1989, and Chow Hang Tung, imprisoned for calling on people to light candles in remembrance, remain behind bars in Hong Kong.
🕯️ In Brussels, Amnesty International activists, trade unionists, and supporters gathered for a candlelight march and sought to deliver petitions to the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office calling for the release of Lee Cheuk Yan and Chow Hang Tung.
📢 Memory is not a crime. Commemoration is not a crime. Solidarity is not a crime.
🗣️ As Lee Cheuk Yan reminds us: “The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.”

🗣️ "We stand with Ukrainian workers amid continued Russian attacks."
Speaking at the ILO event Workers, War and Resilience: The Role of Ukrainian Trade Unions and Global Solidarity, Eric Manzi reaffirmed the ITUC’s solidarity with workers in Ukraine.
The ITUC is appalled by the rising civilian casualties and the destruction of homes, schools, healthcare facilities, public services and cultural sites. As workers continue to provide essential services under extraordinarily difficult conditions, the ITUC condemns these attacks and calls for full respect for international humanitarian law.
Workers and their families must be protected and supported to rebuild their lives, workplaces and communities. Lasting peace, social justice and security can only be achieved through respect for international law, genuine dialogue and common security for all.

🇵🇹The ITUC stands in solidarity with the workers and unions of Portugal taking part in today's general strike against the government's proposed labour reforms.
Portuguese workers are taking action to defend fair wages, secure employment, collective bargaining, trade union freedoms, maternity and paternity rights, and the fundamental right to strike. Their struggle reflects the fight of working people everywhere against precarious work, low pay, and attacks on workers' rights.
✊We support their call for better living and working conditions, stronger public services, and policies that put workers before corporate interests.

🇱🇧 Solidarity with Lebanese workers amid renewed escalation
We express our solidarity with Lebanese workers and their families as renewed Israeli military attacks deepen the humanitarian, social and economic crisis in their country.
⚠️ The ITUC is deeply concerned by reports of civilian casualties and damage to homes, public services and infrastructure and reiterates that these can never be targeted.
🕊️ The ITUC reiterates its call for an immediate end to military actions that endanger civilians, respect for international humanitarian law and human rights, and unrestricted humanitarian access for affected populations.
🤝 The international trade union movement stands with Lebanese workers in their call for peace, social justice and recovery. The ITUC will continue to support its Lebanese affiliate, the National Federation of Workers and Employees Trade Unions in Lebanon (FENASOL), and to advocate for the protection of workers' rights, decent work and lasting peace in Lebanon and across the region.
🏘️ Workers and their families must be protected from the consequences of conflict and given the support needed to rebuild their lives and communities.

The ITUC calls for international action to address the multiplying humanitarian risks in #Cuba following intensified US sanctions, including a fuel blockade.
🗣️ "Civilians and workers should never pay the price for geopolitical conflicts and unilateral political decisions. The tightening of sanctions against Cuba has a direct and negative impact on working people, undermining access to basic goods and services, and increasing social suffering." @luc_triangle ITUC General Secretary

🗣️ “The 2026 ITUC Global Rights Index reveals a deepening global crisis for workers' rights. This is not accidental — it’s the billionaire coup against democracy to strip away rights, silence workers, and rig economies for the powerful few. The fight for workers’ rights is the #FightForDemocracy, for dignity at work, and for a fair future.” @luc_triangle ITUC General Secretary

📢 JUST LAUNCHED: The 2026 ITUC Global Rights Index
🗣️“The 2026 Global Rights Index shows that the crisis for workers’ rights is no longer confined to the margins - it is now at the heart of democracies. Governments are failing to protect working people, and in many cases are actively undermining them.” @luc_triangle ITUC General Secretary

AI must advance human dignity, decent work, and democracy.
Pope Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas challenges the idea that technological change is inevitable and beyond democratic control. Workers deserve a voice in how AI is designed, deployed, and governed.
Technology should serve people—not the other way around.

🇵🇪✊ From next week’s presidential election runoff to the fight for rights for all #PlatformWorkers, ITUC affiliates @catpperu and @cutperu are mobilising in the #FightForDemocracy! 🗳️🚴📱
This month, ITUC and @CSA_TUCA joined CATP and CUT on the ground to strengthen organising and solidarity. Together, each confederation is developing action plans to win an ILO Convention and Recommendation on platform work in Geneva, secure ratification at home, and organise workers across every platform and sector in #Peru. 🤝🔥
While the far-right and tech billionaires work together to weaken democracy and workers’ rights, the global trade union movement is uniting to expand democracy and deliver rights for all workers. ✊🌍⚖️
The ITUC condemns the failure of the 2026 NPT Review Conference to advance nuclear disarmament.
While most states worked in good faith to reduce growing nuclear dangers, nuclear-armed states and their allies blocked meaningful progress and continued to rely on dangerous nuclear deterrence policies.
Trade unions worldwide are clear: nuclear weapons are incompatible with peace, democracy, social justice and human security.
More than 5 million signatures have been delivered calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Workers and communities should not pay the price of militarisation and nuclear escalation.
Lasting peace cannot coexist with nuclear weapons. Their complete elimination remains an urgent necessity for humanity.
