Sculptor Tim Shaw drew on his own memories of Northern Ireland during the Troubles, as well as scenes from the Iraq War and 2007 Glasgow airport attack, as inspiration for Man on Fire.

The sculpture shows a figure engulfed in flames and is based on images of the 2005 Basra riots, the 2007 Glasgow airport attack and Shaw's own memories from The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
