Neste dia, a 25 de agosto de 1921, milhares de mineiros da Virgínia Ocidental iniciaram uma marcha armada em defesa da sindicalização das minas de carvão, dando início à Batalha de Blair Mountain, o maior levantamento armado da história do movimento operário norte-americano. Os mineiros enfrentavam salários baixos, condições de trabalho perigosas, habitação controlada pelas companhias e um sistema de scrip que os obrigava a gastar os seus salários nas lojas das próprias empresas. As companhias recorriam à violência e a forças privadas para impedir a organização sindical.

Cerca de 10 mil mineiros marcharam contra as forças anti-sindicais reunidas pelas companhias mineiras, que fortificaram Blair Mountain com metralhadoras e trincheiras. Durante vários dias, os mineiros combateram as forças do xerife Don Chafin, até que o presidente Warren Harding enviou tropas federais, aviões e armamento para esmagar o levantamento. Estima-se que mais de um milhão de balas tenham sido disparadas durante os confrontos. A intervenção do Exército obrigou os mineiros a depor as armas, encerrando a maior insurreição armada de trabalhadores da história dos Estados Unidos.
