Wobblies from Plymouth, N. Devon, @BristolIWW, & @IwwKernow held a picket outside a restaurant yesterday & won back £370 of unpaid wages!

"The worker was paid all £2,000 she was owed there and then."
Well done @BristolIWW & @IWW_PAWA who, after a short direct action, secured 2K in unpaid wages for a Bristol care worker! #solidarity
Bad bosses beware: the @iww won't stand for #WageTheft!

WAGE THEFT is NEVER acceptable.
Shocked to hear about allegations of #WageTheft at Brighton Language College @brightonlc 😡
All workers should be paid for their work!
It’s time to pay up! #tefl@TeflUnion
Well, it's been a while!

Dead Grockle is one of our members!
Give this a watch, a good description of historical economic processes that make North Devon & the South West a poor, peripheral region.
📽️ 𝙉𝙀𝙒 𝙑𝙄𝘿𝙀𝙊!
'Levelling Up' won't save the South West.
Inherent features in our economic system make our Peninsula a poor, peripheral area. Without even thinking about those processes, no "solution" will be successful.

Working in the heat? 😓 Talk to your colleagues about what can be done to make work safer. From taking additional water breaks, getting work to provide you with suncream etc. Then mob-up & demand it from your boss!
If you're in N. Devon and want to do this, get in touch.
☀️ Hot weather is forecast in North Devon over the next few days.
Make sure to look out for vulnerable friends, family or neighbours.

But clearly there are significant issues about the rural-regional fringes, with economically obsolete populations & the tendency towards rapid demographic ageing. Syndicalism can be very helpful for organising a grassroots defence, but it needs a much larger politcial discussion.
"By 2043, nearly a quarter of the population are predicted to be over 65."
In North Devon, the 65+ are ALREADY 25% of the population. The future is here, in a peripheral area with a poor, surplus population, with high youth flight. We need to do more to unionise care workers.
📰NEW: briefing paper on the 'care chasm'.
Over 70s population set to increase by more than double the rate of care workers.

The contrast is summed up in a single plot:
A great read for a Sunday afternoon! @EdinburghIww organiser Matilda explains how fear can stop us from taking the step to organise our workplaces, and how it can inspire falsely "rational" responses!
Really good stuff, read it here 👇

The law on flexible work is changing.
But how?
✔️ Right to request from DAY 1
✔️ Flexible working requests increase from 1 to 2 every 12 months, and
✔️ Employers must respond within 2 months instead of 3
✔️ Employers must consult employees before rejecting a request
✔️ Employee no longer has to explain what effect it would have on the organisation or how it will be dealt with.
And what will unions and employers need to do?
✅ Update policies
✅ Get familiar with the new Acas statutory code of practice
✅ Review job roles for possible flexible working options and include in job adverts
✅ Make sure flexible working is for everyone
✅ Conduct an equality impact assessment of your flexible working policy
✅ Track who has access to flexible working and their experiences of it.
The law won’t change until April 2024…
but employers need to be prepared.
Jokes aside, turnout to oppose fash in Cornwall was probably as high or higher than London, per capita! (remember London has about 18x more people)
While in the North East some places let them march entirely unopposed
On the fash side in Cornwall, the leadership was all... /1
A democratic, strong workplace union won't appear at your workplace by magic. So why wait?
Chat with a colleague about issues they're having at work and how they could be resolved.
Start organising THIS WEEK! If you're in North Devon pop us a message & we can help.
No excuses!
One of our members had a little breakthrough in their organising today, despite being in an atomised & dispersed workplace. Well on the way to forming a workplace union!
So what are you 🫵 up to?
