ANOTHER DEATH IN POLICE CUSTODY 🛑

His name is Gideon Makau Mbandi, alias " Maiyu" a 45-year-old matatu operator working with Trinity Sacco.

Mr Mbandi was arrested at the evening hours of Tuesday 4th August 2026, at his business premises in Nunguni Shopping Centre on allegations that he was in possession of a panga and was detained at Kilungu Police Station.

The family later received information the following day through a friend that Mr Mbandi died under police custody and his body had been taken to Kilungu Sub County Hospital Mortuary by police.

The family reports that they were asked to report to the police station only to be informed that Mr Makau had allegedly died by suicide after using his trousers while inside the police cells.

The family is seeking answers on how is it possible to commit suicide using a trouser in a police cell in the presence of other accused persons, why the police rushed to take his body to the morgue without the knowledge of the family and since when did possessing a panga become a crime warranting arrest?

What was the rush for? What was police hiding?
