School nutrition professionals from across Iowa recently strengthened their skills in recipe standardization during the Iowa Department of Education's Recipe Standardization Training for School Meals.

Participants explored how standardized recipes help schools serve nutritious, high-quality meals that consistently meet USDA requirements while improving food safety, reducing waste and managing costs. Through hands-on activities, attendees learned how to calculate recipe meal pattern crediting, conduct nutrient analysis, evaluate recipes through student taste tests and scale recipes for large school meal programs.

These trainings help Iowa's school nutrition teams be better equipped to serve meals that are healthy, consistent and appealing to students every day.
