A teacher.
A firefighter.
A nurse.
A stay-at-home dad.
A woman who moved across the country to care for her sick mother.
I didn't understand why he was showing me any of this.
Then he picked up my badge.
The one I'd turned in that morning.
He placed it in the box.
Right beside all the others.
And said quietly:
"You know what the hardest part of this job is?"
I shook my head.
He looked down at the box.
"Watching good people leave."
The room fell silent.
Then he smiled.
Not a sad smile.
A proud one.
"When I was younger, I thought my job was building a company."
He tapped the box.
"Turns out my real job was helping people get to the next chapter of their lives."
I felt my eyes start to sting.
Because suddenly those weren't old ID badges anymore.
They were pieces of people's lives.
