Here's one way to look at PlayStation's evolution over the past 10 years.
PS+ revenue: +303%
Digital games & add on sales (MTX): +360%
Physical game revenue: -33%.
In other words, digital content and subscriptions have been the main growth driver and significantly grown the overall market.
There are obviously some caveats:
-Sony recognizes gross PS Store revenue but only the license fee on physical sales, so this is not a 1:1 revenue comparison, but the growth figure still works.
- Higher ASPs, including $70 games and premium PS+ tiers, have also contributed to revenue growth.
This is clear in the second chart. Packaged software unit sales fell 58% from FY18 to FY25, while revenue only declined around 33% (as above).
Even so, 70 million annual physical disc sales is notable and shows there is still a market for discs.
Which is why it's clear to me that Sony’s decision was very much about cost cutting and aligning with a future $1,000+ PS6 targeting high spenders already embedded in PlayStation’s digital ecosystem.
But the overarching takeaway here, and why discs were always going to go away at some point (whether it be PS6 or PS7) is that the entire console business model has changed:
- Digital is now the primary way to buy or own full games.
- Leading games are increasingly digital F2P/live-service titles, and MTX/DLC spending exceeds premium game sales.
- PS+ revenue has surged, with most subscribers now on higher tiers and having built digital libraries.
From an overall gamer POV, digital is indeed more convenient and preferred, but that doesn't mean there can't be legacy support for discs and better digital game rights (refunds, gift, share).
Square Enix report 90% of their game sales are digital.
• Download unit sales - 6.65M (90.1%)
• Packaged unit sales - 730k (9.9%)
