I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
If your company “promotes” you, or you accept a new offer where you are 100% ready on Day 1, it is not an elevation, but a job title evolution. Career ascension requires taking responsibilities which even though you may not be 100% ready on Day 1, you know that you have inherent capabilities to quickly rise to the occasion.
The year 2025 is just around the corner, and I am asking you to plan to accelerate your leadership ascent. Simply, aim higher and keep looking up because no one was born a CEO, a Director, or a president. All, and everyone, were once not one. Yes, it’s time for the next lift because you’re more than ready. And will cross as many (visible and invisible) are holding that crossover “bridge” to help.
Yes, you must understand that you have some wins and you must leverage on those for the next level. Good People, in the Igbo Nation, it takes the killing of one leopard to be called a killer of LEOPARDS. That means, we must use even the “little” wins to ascend into the next level.
What has 2024 provided to you? Can you build on those little wins? Plan for the #crossover because 2025 is going to be amazing. Aim higher, think BIG and go to win in 2025. Remember: abundance is in the future.
I used to write long articles here, but when I realized that few have time for such, I stopped writing them. But someone had the time to read one of my old articles which was titled “The Post-Nigerian Petroleum Era”, and came up with how we read these days. Yes, Oluleke Babayomi, Ph.D., R.Eng. read it, and he has "satchetized" it for us.
“Thank you, Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe, for this thoughtful, insightful, poetic piece. Since it is a long read, I present a summary of the key points below for the benefit of all.
-Nigeria's focus on oil has eroded all progress made in the pre-oil era in economics, agriculture, trade and intellectual development.
- The country's fate appears grim as oil either loses significance or oil reserves become depleted.
- The risky political arena has made governance a no-go area to the nation's brightest and best, hence sham governance has been perpetuated since the demise of the generation of Azikiwe, Awolowo and Bello.
- Present-day leadership is not driven by any long-term vision to change the status quo.
- Nigeria's regional influence will likely be reduced to nothing after the oil-era, leaving only one economically, technologically and politically dominant country on the continent - South Africa.
- Nigeria's post-oil era: Many federally-funded institutions and programs will collapse. Presently poorly-funded educational institutions will then be left to fend for themselves and seek external funding. States will become more financially innovative and prudent due to loss of income from the federal purse.
The way out for Nigeria:
1) Invest in education, especially entrepreneurial and technical education to catalyze technological innovation in agriculture and other areas.
2) Develop broadband technologies to catalyze internet-supported business growth.
3) Appropriate education and financial incentives for artisans, traders, sculptors and farmers must be provided to expand their business capabilities.
4) Develop reliable capital markets to finance major capital investments in manufacturing, technology, agriculture and the local petroleum industry.

The record stock market boom in Nigeria is super-amazing: "Last Tuesday (August 29, 20223), the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) witnessed a historic moment as its All-Share Index (ASI) reached a new all-time high of 66,490.34 points, surpassing the previous record of 66,371.20 points that was set on March 5, 2008."
It is indeed an irony. In the season Nigerian investors recorded these new heights, most Nigerians are leaving the country: '“In the first half of the year [2023], we [the UK] granted approximately 132,000 visas"'... to Nigerians. How do you reconcile a season of stock market boom with one where young people seem hopeless?
Indeed, we have a lot of work ahead in the nation and part of it will involve creating an economy which works for ALL. The investment dividends will start coming for many of us, and that will also be a reminder that in this season of boom for a very few, many citizens are under stress. This is not being against the rich, rather, it is a call for an economic system that is fair for all, anchored on shared prosperity for the rise of all.
