If you’re dropping flair out of it, then Ashley Cole is slightly a better left back than Marcelo.

Marcelo was obviously more gifted on the ball. The dribbling, the technique, the combinations, the little touches in midfield areas, he could make you forget he was a left-back. He was a proper Joga Bonito. But if we’re judging the actual position of LEFT-BACK, Ashley Cole has a very strong argument to be slightly better.

He could defend 1v1 better, recover quickly, read danger, tackle better too. His defensive intelligence was probably his biggest strength.

He was not just good defensively too, Ashley Cole finished his Premier League career with 385 apps, 31 assists, 616 tackles, 336 interceptions, 1,120 recoveries and 147 clean sheets. His tackle success was 74%. He also created 200 chances in 229 Premier League appearances for Chelsea alone. That’s a solid and balanced numbers.

Ashley Cole could actually play. He wasn’t Marcelo going forward, obviously, but he was still a very good attacking full back. He overlapped, combined with midfielders and wingers, delivered crosses and created chances consistently. During his Chelsea years, he was among the Premier League’s top 5 defenders for chances created, tackles and successful passes.

Marcelo gives you more flair, Marcelo is the more aesthetically pleasing player to watch.

But Ashley Cole gives you elite defending, elite recovery ability, elite 1v1 defending, physicality, consistency and enough quality going forward to still be a genuine attacking threat.

That balance is what makes him better ability for ability.

He was the left-back in title winning Arsenal and Chelsea teams, including the Invincibles.

Unless, what you mean by Ability is only the attacking aspect.
