There’s still a lot of hesitation around AI in software development.
Let me share my honest experience — as a Business Analyst who codes.
AI has not replaced my thinking.
It has reduced execution friction.
It doesn’t gather requirements for me.
It doesn’t understand stakeholder politics.
It doesn’t define business strategy.
That’s still human work.
What AI does well is this:
• Speeds up structuring ideas
• Accelerates prototyping
• Helps validate logic quickly
• Reduces repetitive coding cycles
• Allows faster iteration from requirement → working feature
The real advantage isn’t “AI writing code.”
The real advantage is clarity + domain knowledge + structured prompts.
If you understand business models, workflows, edge cases, and architecture, AI becomes a productivity multiplier — not a threat.
It doesn’t replace strategic thinking.
It amplifies professionals who already know what they’re doing.

Building foundational AI at the level of OpenAI or Anthropic isn’t just about talent.
It requires:
Massive capital.
Advanced semiconductor access.
Hyperscale data centers.
Stable power.
GPU clusters.
Deep research funding.
Long-term, patient investors.
When we say “foundation,” we’re talking about legacy-scale AI companies — not just apps built on APIs.
In Nigeria, we’re still navigating real structural constraints:
• Power instability
• FX volatility
• Limited deep-tech venture funding
• High cost of compute
• Weak semiconductor ecosystem
• Broader infrastructure gaps
Foundational AI demands billions of dollars and sustained research investment over years.
But this doesn’t mean we are helpless consumers.
There is enormous opportunity for Nigeria to:
• Build AI-powered vertical solutions (fintech, education, agriculture, logistics)
• Develop strong AI engineering talent
• Train domain-specific African datasets
• Build globally competitive products on top of existing infrastructure
Every ecosystem evolves in phases:
Adoption.
Adaptation.
Innovation.
Ownership.
We are still early in the journey — but we are not incapable.
The real conversation shouldn’t be “Why don’t we have OpenAI?”
It should be:
How do we intentionally build the ecosystem — policy, capital, infrastructure, and talent — that can one day support foundation-level AI?
That’s the work ahead.
