@SAPoliceService
The South African Police Service, through Operation Vala Umgodi, continue to intensify operations against illegal mining activities in Mashobodo under Ngodwana Policing area.
These unwavering efforts has resulted in the arrest of nine (09) foreign nationals from Mozambique today, Saturday 03 October 2026.
The arrests are part of many disruptive activities to destabilize illegal mining activities.
The report indicates that a multidisciplinary team under Operation Vala Umgodi were acting on intelligence information when they pounced on a group of illegal miners in Mashobodo and it was during this time when they cornered the nine male suspects.
Police are working collaboratively with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain the status of the arrested suspects in the country.
During the operation, Police also recovered pendukas (mining implements), some chemicals suspected to be used to refine gold-bearing material.
The arrested suspects are facing charges in relation to illegal mining activities and possession of gold-bearing material.
The nine are expected to appear at court in due course.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise emphasized that Police have been reporting the successes of the Operations and have never been reluctant nor hesitant in addressing illegal mining. The arrests further demonstrate SAPS's unwavering commitment.
"As the SAPS, we continue to unsure the utilization of all available resources in dealing with illegal mining.
Similar Operations will continue to be carried out, not only in Mashobodo, but also in other areas, including Barberton, Sabie, Pilgrim's Rest etc. We urge the public, not to harbour illegal miners whose activities have harmful repercussions for the environment and the livelihoods of residents, " said the General.
"This Ethiopian man sent WhatsApp voice messages to my daughter, threatening us after we asked him to leave and stop renting our container on June 28th.
We initially thought he was a pastor because he used to attend church every Sunday.
He also called us derogatory names and mentioned that just 2 litres of something could destroy my property, implying he intends to burn the place.
For those still harbouring such individuals on their properties, be very cautious- these people seem determined to destroy us." Worried South African father from Moloto
