Let's talk about how to carry money for your International Trips
Mode of payments
- Make an excel. Put in the expenses which you will be compulsorily doing. Eg.
- Stay Bookings
- Tickets to attractions like Disneyland etc
- Purchase of passes for the city/country
- Particular tours etc
- For the above you can either make the payment upfront before leaving for the trip from India or budget them on the card which you plan to use at the foreign location.
Cash
- You will need cash too on your trip
- Check if the country you are visiting needs Visa Payment in their local currency (Plan for it and don't rely on ATMs)
- Also most stay places collect local taxes in cash only
- Cash will also be needed for daily expenses, such as local commute tickets, food, water etc
- Based on the card you will be carrying make a rough estimate of the cash you will need and withdraw the same at your destination.
- You can also carry the same from your home location, but a local ATM would be better
- For backup if you don't feel confident that ATM and all will work etc then take USD/EUR from your home country itself so you're not stuck
- Always make sure you use the local bank ATM's for withdrawal. Stay miles away from Currency Conversation ATM machines. They'll rip you off in a transaction.
- Want to get cash/exchange and don't know what's a good rate? Check it here https://t.co/cOPEy9p3Fx Anything a bit higher/lower than rates here is a real good exchage rate.
Tip: Moving countries within Europe and need to keep changing currency stick to one Exchange. If you show them the bill they usually waive the next time you go to exchange money. Small saving but significant when on a long trip. (Did it with Riya Exchange in EU and saved much)
Which card?
- You have an option to use Zero Mark Up Forex Card or Normal Forex Card or your Credit Card
- If you are into points and all you will definitely just use the Credit Card. You do incur a cost on the transaction, but then it's calculated against the points and benefits etc. (Do your homework)
- Not wanting to use Credit Card then the best option is the Zero Forex Credit Cards
- Now based on your above calculations you would know the approx amount you need to pay via card and the cash needed for your trip.
- Load up your card with amount and swipe when abroad
- For the cash part, you can visit the ATM and withdraw the said amount at once or in parts (Do check ATM withdrawal charges and decide)
Tip: When using your credit card or a Zero Markup Forex Card make sure you put a limit from your app. Eg. Keep a max swipe limit of Rs. 10K - 15K. Based on your payment patterns. Why? In case of the card getting lost, robbed or skimmed, the max transaction is fixed and not your whole limit. Now days with apps you can just turn off International Transaction in a click. Just enable it. Swipe and disable. Simple.
- The traditional Forex Cards. The problem is you need to call the card the company to refill it. Fill forms. Some Forex cards can load only one currency etc. Left using one post the new age ones came out.
Few Zero Forex Credit Cards
Scapia: https://t.co/9S0vLxd6mr (CC)
Fi Card: https://t.co/d8EUaGIvla (Needs a higher minimum balance Bank Account to get Zero Forex)
Niyo: https://t.co/jOv0K6kPct (Needs a FD equivalent of Credit Card Limit)
Tip: Coins are a pain when dealing in cash with few countries. Make sure you keep some in case for memory and use up the rest of the ones at the local supermarket etc to buy chocolates etc, rather than carrying them all back home. Some airports too have coin machines.
