Missing Mlolongo Prado emerges as key lead in Dr Victoria Mutiso murder probe
The investigation into the murder of clinical psychologist and researcher Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso has taken a new turn after detectives linked a Toyota Prado believed to have been used during the attack to a vehicle that reportedly disappeared from her Mlolongo home during a demolition earlier this year.
According to investigators, the Prado intercepted the taxi carrying Dr Mutiso moments before gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire.
She was shot three times in what police believe was a carefully planned attack in Nairobi's Upper Hill.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has established that the Prado may be one of several vehicles that went missing after a court-ordered eviction at Dr Mutiso's approximately 20-acre property in Mlolongo, Machakos County, on February 12.
The demolition allegedly destroyed property worth millions of shillings, with several vehicles also disappearing from the compound.
Detectives are now investigating whether the missing Prado is the same vehicle used during the fatal attack.
They have also shifted attention to the eviction process itself.
Investigators are examining court documents presented during the eviction after reports that one of the murder suspects, Rose Mbithe Mulwa, presented the eviction order to officers at Mlolongo Police Station. Detectives want to establish whether the order was genuine or fraudulently obtained.
Nearly four months after the demolition, Dr Mutiso reported cases of trespass, malicious damage to property and theft at Mlolongo Police Station. Investigators now believe that complaint could provide important clues about the events that eventually led to her death.
Police also believe Dr Mutiso began receiving threats after actively pursuing the case. On July 7, she reported at Kilimani Police Station that men riding a motorcycle had allegedly followed and threatened her while she was driving home.
Three weeks later, she was shot dead while travelling in a taxi to work in Upper Hill.
During a search at Rose Mbithe Mulwa's home in Karen, detectives reportedly recovered documents containing details of the taxi involved in the shooting, including its registration number and vehicle type.
Investigators are now examining whether the house was used to plan the attack.
The Mlolongo property has been the subject of a long-running ownership dispute since 2002 involving Dr Mutiso's husband, Prof. David Musyimi Ndetei, and his former wife, Rose Mbithe Mulwa.
Mulwa, who contested the Machakos gubernatorial seat in the 2022 General Election, and her son Chris Mulwa remain in custody.
A court is expected to rule on Monday on an application by the prosecution seeking to detain the two suspects for an additional 30 days as investigations continue.
