@therealnevr I agree. The US dominates in media and tries (and succeeds) to spread their influence on every other country. We need to hear our local talent and celebrate our own artists.
Canada has an endless amount of talent and amazing artists. However, just like most things, the US needs to dominate and spread their influence on everyone. It is sad, but a quota of Canadian content is necessary so artists can get the following that they deserve. #POPMUSF21
@HannahFlynn1014 I agree, I can admit that there are some cover songs that I like better than their originals. I believe people can still enjoy cover versions of music but the original artists deserve the credit at the very least.
Schlock music is most definitely cultural theft. White artists stole songs from black artists to make money, without crediting them. However, individual's still may enjoy this music, but they should at least acknowledge its history. #POPMUSF21
@alyssa_dominie Good point there. Personally, I enjoy a lot of artists that stray away from being "pitch perfect". There's nothing better than hearing the raw vocals and true emotion behind an artists voice.
@Brandon84872063 Great point! It is much more enjoyable to listen to an artist with an overflowing passion for their music. It can make the difference between simply hearing a song, and feeling like you are fully engaged with the artists thoughts and emotions.
I believe Ray Charles used a breaking voice to emphasize his lyrics and to catch the ear of the listeners. The break is used as a sort of hook that makes Charles' song "I've got a Woman" so recognizable. #POPMUSF21
@lauraamacinnis At first they were seen as exclusive and shown as a status symbol. However, as Airpods became popular they lost their appeal as a status symbol because any average person can have them. They are now used as their intended function, which is a way to listen to music.
@JaredHiscock2 It is ridiculously easy to find new music on Spotify. Ever since I started using the app, my taste in music and genre preferences has expanded enormously. Always looking forward to the Discover Weekly Playlist refreshing every Mondayπ
On Spotify, you have the ability to listen to other users playlists and liked songs (if they are public), which can be a great way to access many different genres of music. However, this can also open up the idea to judge people based on their music preferences. #POPMUSF21
@JordanN54312489 Everyone is allowed to enjoy music in their own way and many people just want a catchy tune to play in the background. These catchy tunes are popular for a reason as they fit the needs of a large population, as you said.
@cassieehannahh I agree that this is the case for many, as I often play music that definitely requires active listening to understand what is being conveyed. Friends will ask me "what are you listening to?" and request a "catchy" song as an alternative instead of trying to listen to the lyrics.
A false need in popular music is that you must have designer clothes and expensive material items to be considered successful. I believe popular music can appeal to a passive audience as many listeners do not care for the lyrics and simply enjoy songs for being catchy. #POPMUSF21
