DECLARATION OF NATIONWIDE SECURITY EMERGENCY & RECRUITMENT OF ADDITIONAL ARMY AND POLICE PERSONNEL
Fellow Nigerians,
Today, in view of the emerging security situation, I have decided to declare a nationwide security emergency and order additional recruitment into the Armed Forces.
By this declaration, the police and the army are authorised to recruit more personnel. The police will recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the total to 50,000.
Although I had previously approved the nationwide upgrade of police training facilities, the police authorities are, by this statement, authorised to use various National Youth Service Corps camps as training depots.
The officers being withdrawn from VIP guard duties should undergo crash training to debrief them and deliver more efficient police services when deployed to security-challenged areas of the country.
The DSS also has my authority to immediately deploy all the forest guards already trained to flush out the terrorists and bandits lurking in our forests. The agency also has my directive to recruit more men to man the forests. There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil.
My fellow Nigerians, this is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground, especially in security-challenged areas. The times require all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we should all get involved in securing our nation.
Let me take this moment to commend our security agencies for working together to secure the release of the 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and the 38 worshippers in Kwara State. We will continue to sustain the efforts to rescue the remaining students of Catholic School in Niger State and other Nigerians still being held hostage.
To the leadership and rank and file of our Armed Forces, I commend your courage and your sacrifice. This is a challenging moment for our nation and for the military institution itself. I charge you to remain resolute, to restore peace across all theatres of operation, and to uphold the highest standards of discipline and integrity. There must be no compromise, no collusion, and no negligence. The Nigerian people are counting on you, and this administration will provide the support you need to succeed.

SECURITY: SEN. MONGUNO CHAIRS THE 10TH SENATE 2025 NATIONAL SECURITY SUMMIT โ NORTH-EAST ZONAL HEARING
The 10th Senate, through its Ad-Hoc Committee on National Security led by the Chief Whip of the Senate and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Sen. Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Esq, today held the North-East Zonal Hearing of the 2025 National Security Summit at the Government House Multi-Purpose Hall, Maiduguri.
The event, themed โStrengthening Nigeriaโs National Security Architecture: Innovation, Collaboration and Resilience in a Changing World,โ brought together key stakeholders and citizens from across the region.
Sen. Monguno commended the unwavering efforts of Nigeriaโs security operatives and the commitment of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum in the fight against insurgency. He recalled the Senateโs resolution of May 6, 2025, which mandated this Summit to capture firsthand perspectives from Nigerians most affected by insecurity.
He highlighted the severe impact of insurgency on the North-East, citing the activities of Boko Haram, ISWAP, Lakurawa, Ansaru, and armed bandits which have resulted in widespread loss of lives, destruction of livelihoods, displacement, and a deepening humanitarian crisis marked by rising numbers of widows, orphans, and prolonged stays in IDP camps.
Senator Monguno stressed that Nigeriaโs security challenges are multi-dimensional and global, made worse by poverty and the actions of local collaborators who aid insurgent groups. He reaffirmed that the Senate is in the region to listen, assess root causes, understand community impact, and craft legislative solutions that will enhance national security and protect citizens.
He called for strengthened collaboration among security agencies, state governments, religious and traditional leaders, civil society, international partners, and local communities. He also noted progress made through both kinetic military efforts and non-kinetic interventions, including amnesty for genuinely repentant insurgents.
The Senator reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to sustaining strategic partnerships with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, and ensuring full funding for the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
Addressing frontline troops, Sen. Monguno assured them of the Senateโs unwavering support and prioritisation of their welfare.
Heemphasisedd the importance of innovation and technology, such as drones, advanced intelligence systems, and modern equipment in tackling evolving threats, noting that obsolete tools can no longer achieve desired security outcomes.
The Senator urged citizens to speak freely, offer practical solutions, and engage actively in the Summit, assuring them that all contributions would be treated with confidentiality and seriousness.
He concluded by wishing participants a fruitful and impactful deliberation.
Sen MT Monguno has made history as the first legislator in Borno to secure fully funded international MSc scholarships for 11 science graduates to study in India, reflecting his commitment to youth empowerment and human capital development.
