To meet the needs of today’s travelers and tomorrow’s growth, our Program is planning a modern, earthquake resilient bridge across the Columbia River.
The new multimodal structure will enhance mobility for all users — strengthening the connection between our communities.
The aging Interstate Bridge wasn't designed to withstand earthquakes.
A replacement bridge will keep this vital crossing over the Columbia River operational, allowing travelers, communities and emergency services to access the bridge in the event of a significant seismic event.
Public transit on I-5 currently gets stuck in the same congestion (and bridge lifts) as cars and trucks.
Increased transit service across a new fixed-span bridge will be part of a multimodal solution that improves access, connectivity and reliability for travelers.
We've reached a major milestone!
Our Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement has been published—moving us one step closer to building a safer replacement bridge.

✔️ Fact: Our core set of projects will improve safety, strengthen earthquake resilience, expand transit and active transportation options and make daily travel safer and more reliable.
It takes a lot of work—and nerves—to keep the Interstate Bridge up and running.

Over $132 million in freight commodity value crosses the Interstate Bridge every day.
With trade volumes in the region expected to double by 2040, now is the time to replace the aging bridge with one that prioritizes the efficient movement of goods.

The Interstate Bridge was built and designed with transit in mind.
Electric streetcars operated across the bridge from the day it opened in 1917 until 1940.
Our transit investments will improve access and travel time reliability for people on both sides of the Columbia River.
