Indochinese spitting cobra, the snake that still killed a human, even after it's dead. This is the snake species that killed Peng Fan, the popular Chinese chef. He was preparing a dish (snake soup) using an Indochinese spitting cobra. He cut off the snake’s head, set it aside, and continued cooking. About 20 minutes later, when he picked up the severed head to throw it away, it bit him and injected venom.

The venom acted very quickly. He died before antivenom could be given. Like I always tell you, snake heads can still bite and inject venom for up to an hour (sometimes longer) after being cut off because of residual nerve activity and slow metabolism.

Among the greatest blessings Allah has bestowed upon us is that He has made us brothers in faith. Allah Almighty says in His Clear Book:

“The believers are but brothers.”
(Qur’an 49:10)

It is the bond of faith that unites hearts. It is the strongest and firmest of bonds, and it is a blessing from Allah upon His servants. Therefore, it is obligatory upon us to preserve it and safeguard it from everything that could harm it.

One must beware of anything that weakens this bond, such as severing relations, breaking ties, harbouring hatred, and holding grudges. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Do not envy one another, do not inflate prices against one another, do not hate one another, do not turn away from one another, and do not undercut one another in trade. Rather, be servants of Allah as brothers. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim: he does not wrong him, abandon him, or despise him. Taqwa is here” — and he pointed to his chest three times. “It is sufficient evil for a person to despise his Muslim brother. The blood, wealth and honour of every Muslim are sacred to another Muslim.”

Brotherhood and solidarity among Muslims

Brotherhood and solidarity among Muslims are a religious obligation. The Prophet ﷺ gave us one of the finest examples illustrating this bond when he said:

“The believers, in their mutual affection, mercy and compassion, are like one body: when one limb suffers, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever.”

This means that Muslims should be like a single body and one structure. If one of them is afflicted by calamity, the others should share his pain, sympathise with him, support him, stand beside him, and provide whatever assistance they can.

Solidarity among Muslims, O brothers, is not merely something supplementary or optional; rather, it is one of the foundations of the life of faith. Through it blessings endure and afflictions are repelled. Islam came to unite hearts that had been divided and to bring together souls that had been separated.

This required solidarity entails several duties: hearts should be purified from resentment, envy and hatred; harm should be withheld from people; mutual support should be in establishing justice and assisting the oppressed against the oppressor; the affairs of fellow Muslims should be attended to; happiness should be brought to them; and they should be comforted in times of calamity.

If one sees his brother suffering from poverty or need, or afflicted by distress or hardship, then he should console him, assist him and relieve his difficulty according to his ability. He should share his pain, return his smile, provide what he needs and relieve him of the hardship that has befallen him.

Cooperation in righteousness and piety

Among the requirements of brotherhood for the sake of Allah is that the members of the Ummah support one another and cooperate with each other, acting upon the words of Allah Almighty:

“And cooperate with one another in righteousness and piety.”
(Qur’an 5:2)

Allah Almighty commanded cooperation in matters of religion and worldly life, and in everything that constitutes righteousness and piety. He also prohibited cooperation in sin and transgression.

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged mutual assistance and cooperation, saying:

“Allah continues to aid His servant so long as the servant aids his brother.”

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“The life of the children of Adam and their livelihood in this world can only be completed through their cooperation with one another.”
