Zulum to NEDC: We want projects with lasting benefits
@BornoGovt State Governor Babagana Umara @ProfZulum has called on the North East Development @NEDCOfficialNg (NEDC) to prioritise embarking on tangible projects that can provide lasting benefits and boost infrastructural development across the six states in the northeast region.
The Governor was speaking on Tuesday at the Government House when he received the expanded management and board of the NEDC led by the State Minister of Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmodu.
Governor Zulum listed security, Dry Inland Ports, African Intercontinental Free Trade Zone, independent electricity supply, and road networks as some of the key priorities for the northeast.
Zulum noted, “I think the time has come for us to prioritise our projects. We have gone into more than 50% of the lifespan of the NEDC. I am not saying that NEDC will collapse. What I mean by lifespan is the funding window allocated to the commission according to the act that established it.”
“So, let's come up with what we can do to get maximum benefit from establishing the commission.”
“Other commissions have come on board; we cannot afford to perform below them. This time around, we must have a yardstick. Otherwise, not only the minister, the chairman of the House committee, or the MD, but all of you are from the northeast; a time will come when we will call you out that there is nothing tangible to show within your tenure.”
Zulum, however, assured the minister and the NEDC management of the governors' commitment within the Northeast to support the commission in achieving its mandate.
The Governor also commended the North East Development Commission for supporting the state with humanitarian aid, school projects, and other programmes that positively affect the lives of the people of Borno.
Speaking earlier, the State Minister of Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmodu, stressed the need for close collaboration with the North East Governors Forum to achieve the broader North East Stabilisation and Development Plan (NESDP).
The minister noted that the Ministry of Regional Development will ensure adequate supervision of NEDC to achieve the need to rebuild and stabilise the northeast region after years of insurgency and economic disruption.
The delegation comprises the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on NEDC, Hon. Usman Zannah, other committee members; the Chairman of the NEDC board, Major General Paul C. Tarfa (Rtd); the MD/CEO of the commission, Mohammed Goni Alkali, and other senior management officials.
*In the Shadow of Greatness: My Journey With Vice President Kashim Shettima*
*By Comrade Mahmud Muhammad*
As someone privileged to serve closely alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima, I find it both a duty and an honour to reflect on a relationship shaped by humility, loyalty, and leadership that transcends titles. Mine is not a story written in grandeur but one forged in the quiet strength of a man who dignifies the smallest voices and uplifts those around him, often without even trying.
My first real encounter with the Vice President—then Governor of Borno State—remains etched in my memory. I was the youngest special assistant in his cabinet. Most would assume someone in my position might be overlooked in such an environment, but not with him. He never once called any of his aides by their names alone. Instead, he added a courtesy and a good humor “Honourable” or “Sir” before every name. To him, it wasn’t just a formality—it was a sign of respect, of inclusion.
To this day, I still hear his warm voice echoing in my mind: “Honourable Comrade Mahmud Muhammad” “Small but Mighty”, “Sir” or “I am mightily proud of you.” That nickname, “Small but Mighty,” stuck. It was coined by him, and it eventually became the name others called me by, too. What does that tell us? That humility is not an act. For VP Shettima, it is his way of life. He is a man who wears greatness with modesty, who reminds us that even in power, one must remain grounded in humility.
Throughout his journey in public service from Commissioner, Governor, Senator, and now Vice President, Senator Shettima has never wavered in his commitment to serving the greatest good. His loyalty is not merely upward, it flows laterally to his team and downward to the people he serves. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a daily dose of lessons in integrity, humility, and purposeful leadership.
His open-door policy isn’t a cliché; it’s a living reality. Whether it’s a cabinet member, a special adviser, or a rank and file, the Vice President listens intently and respectfully. He believes in learning from every voice, regardless of rank or background. That’s not just humility. That’s wisdom. That’s compassion. That’s leadership in its purest form.
Beyond his personal warmth and accessibility, the Vice President possesses an unparalleled ability to unite people across divides—political, religious, and ethnic. He is, in the truest sense, a bridge-builder, and a Pan— Nigerian. His inclusive nature has earned him admiration not only from within our party but across the political spectrum. I have seen him work late into the night, engaged in finding solutions to what happens in poor villages, to empower the girl-child, women and youths, and to drive economic development. His optimism in the face of adversity is infectious. He doesn’t just lead with plans; he leads with purpose.
Equally remarkable is his unwavering loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In private and public, he has repeatedly attested to the President’s integrity, calling him a man who genuinely means well for Nigeria. “I have seen the heart of the President,” he often says, “and I know he means well for this nation. In the fullness of time, posterity will be kind to him.” That bond between them, that conviction and confidence —it is characterised by mutual respect, a shared vision, and Renewed Hope for a better Nigeria, which are the cornerstone of this administration’s strength.

Zulum orders rehabilitation of Dikwa-Marte road
Following a directive from Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Borno State Road Maintenance Agency (BORMA) has completed palliative repair work on the Dikwa-Marte road which links the central and northern parts of the state.
The Executive Chairman of Borno State Road Maintenance Agency, Engr Sadu Auno, stated this on Thursday, emphasising that the measure was to prevent further deterioration ahead of the rainy season.
According to Auno, “the Executive Governor has directed swift action on this vital road, and we immediately swung to action. Now the repair work has been completed.”
“The Governor expressed his deep concern about the condition of the road and he instructed that we should not wait until the rains begin before acting. This road is a lifeline for thousands of people including displaced families who have returned to their homes. We must take swift action to ensure their safety and mobility,” he stated.
He further explained that the palliative measures would include grading critical sections, filling potholes, and reinforcing the damaged pathways to mitigate the risks of rain completely washing them away and disrupting movement.
The Executive Chairman also hinted at the long-term rehabilitation plans for the road which are pending further assessments and funding allocations. However, he stressed that the immediate focus remains to prevent the road from deteriorating completely.
2nd Nigeria Spokespersons’ Summit Concludes in Abuja with Strong Participation from Borno
The 2nd Nigeria Spokespersons Summit organised by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, has successfully ended in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
The three-day summit, themed "Integrity and the Evolving Roles of Spokespersons in Leadership Communications", brought together former Ministers of Information, spokespersons from various government and corporate organisations, doyins of public relations, and other key stakeholders in the communication industry.
The summit was formally declared open by the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajjudeen Abbas.
Borno State was prominently represented at the summit by a high-level delegation led by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar. Accompanying him were the Special Adviser on Media and Official Spokesperson to the Borno State Governor, Dauda Iliya and the Senior Special Assistant on Media, Baba Shiekh Haruna.
A major highlight of the summit was the Ministerial Clinic, during which the current Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, and five former Ministers – Professor Jerry Gana, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, Mr Frank Nweke II, Hon. Labaran Maku, and Alhaji Lai Mohammed – shared valuable insights and experiences on managing communication in public office and responding to emerging issues in the media space.
The summit also marked the official unveiling of the Nigeria Spokespersons’ Charter and Practice Code, a professional framework aimed at enhancing ethical communication and transparency among spokespersons across the country.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the summit, Professor Usman Tar commended the initiative and expressed optimism that the newly introduced Code would play a vital role in shaping public discourse, particularly in states like @BornoGovt.
“The Summit is indeed timely, especially considering the volume of misinformation often circulated about Borno State,” said Professor Tar. “This professional code will significantly aid in promoting accurate narratives and enhancing our public relations strategy, particularly as Governor Babagana Umara @ProfZulum administration intensifies efforts on resettlement and recovery.”

Sahel Think-Tank on Security Meets Zulum to Study Borno Model
A think tank on security in the Sahel region, known as the Alliance of Sahel Institute for Security Studies, along with members of the Norwegian Institute for Conflict Resolution, met with @BornoGovt State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, to explore the innovative security strategies (Borno Model) implemented by the @ProfZulum administration.
At a meeting held in Maiduguri on Saturday, the alliance sought to leverage the Borno Model, a community-driven approach to combating insurgency, as a blueprint for other Sahelian nations facing similar challenges.
The Sahel region, which stretches across several countries, including Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, has faced a surge in violence over the years.
The think tank, comprising experts and policymakers from across the Sahel region, was led by the Special Adviser to the Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff, Hon. Aliyu Ibrahim Gebi.
Part of the delegation were Brigadier General Yusuf Ali, Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor; General Aime B. Simpore from Burkina Faso; Mahamadu Togota from Mali; and Moureima Adamou Noma from the Republic of Niger.
In his remarks, Zulum stated that the Borno Model is one of the most successful security and reintegration strategies in the world, noting that about 300,000 insurgents and their family members have surrendered to the authorities.
Zulum emphasized that to earn the confidence of the people, his administration has executed several projects, including schools, hospitals, markets, and livelihood support for those affected by insurgency.
The governor added that in the last six years, the Borno State Government has established several infrastructures across the three senatorial zones of the state.
