Like, what do they do as a Ministry?

President Ruto of Kenya just dissolved his entire cabinet after dissolving 47 state corporations with overlapping functions after weeks of protests by citizens over a Finance Bill that was going to add more burden on the people.

We can easily count how many new appointments we have at State House, the number of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as Foreign Missions we have created and continue to create over the last 6 years.

A few days ago @PresidentBio was talking about sustaining fiscal discipline and ramping up revenue mobilization to support governance delivery efforts and lessen negative economic impact on the population.

Perhaps we could start by closing down institutions with overlapping functions and also reduce the unnecessary appointments including those at State House to save some money as part of the fiscal discipline measures.

Paul Suffield, the Executive Director of Hilltop Hotels Group (New Brookfields Hotel), has responded to letter from @alfred_kamanda dated July 10, 2024, asking them not allow the Extraordinary General meeting of the #SierraLeone Bar Association since the latter alleged that the announcement of the meeting was "unlawful, unprocedural, and illegal," and states that it was made without any legal authority.

The reply indicates that the hotel, upon receiving the booking, was not informed of any contention regarding the event's authorization. At the time of booking, the hotel entered into an agreement with the client to host the meeting. Suffield highlighted that the hotel only became aware of the potential legal issues upon receiving a letter on July 9, 2024.

The management has sought legal advice and was informed that a court injunction would be necessary to prevent the meeting from proceeding. The letter requests that the SLBA provide the hotel with a court injunction by 2 PM on July 10, 2024, to serve as legal backing should the event be canceled.

Copies of the letter were sent to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, the Inspector General of Police, and the event organizers, @SoeMarrah Marrah and @SerryWara.

Sierra Leone’s foreign reserve has been depleted, both the #MonetaryPolicyStatement of the #BankofSierraLeone (BSL) and the #AnnualUnauditedAccount of the Government of Sierra Leone revealed.

The Central Bank or #BSL stated that the gross foreign reserves which was equivalent to 2.7 Months cover in the last quarter of 2023 is now equivalent to 2.3 months cover in the first quarter of 2024.

It was made more explicit on the Annual Account of Govt where it revealed that Sierra Leone Gross International Reserves plummeted from nearly $600M in December 2023 to $468.35M in January 2024.

They noted that the decline is as a result of effort to support importation of essential commodities, payment of external debt and the importation of the new currency.

In a meeting organized by the Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, @dsengeh to look at the gains the government of @PresidentBio has made so far, the #President said he has made the democracy more liberal.

But just two weeks ago, a female lawyer was invited by the Police for questioning the legitimacy of the President amidst concerns of election manipulation, citing cyber stalking of the #President

@PresidentBio said Sierra Leone now has a liberal democracy but people are not allowed to undertake protest, the last protest saw scores of people killed by government forces for which there has been no accountability.

The President said he has opened the democratic space but he was forced to engage the opposition to enhance peace and stability.

@PresidentBio stated that democracy is open but journalists are subjected to abuses and intimidation from individuals closed to the Presidency when they became critical.

However, the President described journalists as his “Critical Friends.”

Today, Sierra Leone’s Parliament passed a bill to remove jury trials from our justice system.

This legislative change significantly shifts our criminal justice system. Whatever the aim, it raises serious questions about fairness, public trust, and the balance of judicial power. Removing jury trials is a loss of a democratic element. It removes a critical check on judicial power and the community’s role in our justice system.

Obituary for Brigadier General Kestoria Olufemi Kabia

Today, Sierra Leone mourns the loss of a trailblazer and leader, Brigadier General Kestoria Olufemi Kabia, the first female brigadier in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). As the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff for Gender and Equal Opportunity, she exemplified dedication to service, breaking barriers and setting a precedent for women in the military across West Africa.

Born and educated in #SierraLeone, Brigadier Kabia joined the RSLAF in 1978 after completing the Long Service Commissioning Course at the Women’s Army Royal Corps College in the UK. Her illustrious career spanned over three decades, during which she achieved numerous milestones, including being the first female one-star officer to represent Sierra Leone at the African Land Forces Summit in the USA.

Brigadier Kabia was a highly respected figure in military and civil society, known for her expertise in logistics, personnel management, and gender equality advocacy. Her leadership roles included serving as Director of Personnel, Director of Public Relations, and ultimately Assistant Chief of Defence Staff. She played a crucial role in promulgating the first Gender Policy for the RSLAF, fostering partnerships with local and international gender groups, and advocating for women's empowerment in the security sector.

Her civil contributions were equally remarkable. She was involved in various organizations, such as the Soroptimist International – Freetown Chapter, the Women’s Movement for Peace, and numerous educational boards, reflecting her commitment to community service and education.

Brigadier Kabia's educational achievements included a Master of Arts Degree in Education and Administration from the University of Sierra Leone and several diplomas in military strategic studies and management. She was decorated with numerous awards, including the Grand Officer Order of the Rokel (GOOR) and the Golden Jubilee Award.

Brigadier Kabia leaves behind a legacy of courage and unwavering commitment to gender equality and military excellence. RIP

🇸🇱 A New Dawn for Sierra Leone as we Reclaim Democracy.

As we eagerly await the final outcomes of the work of our brothers and sisters on the Tripartite Committee, I am moved on this blessed Sunday, today, to share with you all these inspirational words:
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6)

We remind ourselves that on that fateful day, June 24, 2023, our democracy stumbled.

The very pillars that should uphold our nation—transparency, accountability, and fairness—were shaken. The echoes of that flawed electoral process reverberated through our streets, leaving scars on our collective conscience.

But today, as the sun rises over our resilient land, we must stand united, determined to rewrite our story.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
These ancient words, etched in sacred biblical texts, remind us that our strength lies not in flawed systems but in our unwavering faith in God/Allah.

We trust in a Sierra Leone reborn—a nation where justice will flow like the mighty Rokel River, cleansing the wounds of the present and the past election malpractices.

Our partners—development agencies, regional allies—stand by our side and together, we are forging a path toward unprecedented electoral justice.

No longer shall shadows obscure the ballot boxes; every vote shall be a beacon of Hope. The majority’s WILL, once trampled, shall rise like the resilient mangroves along our coastline.

“In all your ways submit to him.”

Submission to God is not ordinary servitude; it is the surrender to a VISION greater than self.

Our youth, the heartbeat of our nation; our women, the mothers of our nation; and all the old, the unemployed, the physically challenged, all, victims of electoral injustice, submit their dreams, their aspirations, their hunger for change. They demand a seat at the table—a say in their governance. Their voices, once drowned out, must be made to crescendo into a symphony of possibility and moral Justice.

And what awaits us when we submit? “He will make your paths straight.” The winding roads of blatant economic, political and social injustices, the treacherous bends of inequality, intolerance, exclusivity and nepotism—they shall be straightened; not by mere decree, but by our collective resolve.

We, the political architects of this new Sierra Leone, must lay the foundation for generations to come; for our ancestors, who laboured under the scorching sun, we must build a legacy of dignity; for our youth, who carry the torch forward, we must pave a road where hard work pays—not just in sweat but in opportunity; for our women, we must show equality; and for our great-grandchildren, whose names we may never know, we must plant seeds of creativity. Their ideas, like the baobab’s roots, shall crack open the earth and reach for the sky.

Sierra Leone, rise! Let all future ballot boxes overflow with hope. Let electoral justice and accountability flow like the Bintumani Falls.

Let our democracy be a symphony of voices—each note a promise fulfilled.

“In all your ways submit to him.” Let us submit to justice. Let us submit to progress.
